WHO: Lagertha and OTA
WHAT: Lagertha's arrival
WHEN: Thursday afternoon
WHERE: The beach
WARNINGS: None yet, will update if necessary
STATUS: Open, Complete

The first thing she noticed was the hot sun, hotter than she had ever experienced before. She was wearing the leather pants and shirt that she wore in battle. She was sweating and they were clinging to her uncomfortably. She noticed a silver bracelet on her wrist that hadn't been there before. It was much smoother and finer than the work of the smiths in Kattegat. Perhaps it was the work of the gods.

As she opened her eyes and sat up, the second thing she noticed was the beauty of the surroundings. She was sitting on a white sandy beach, and above her were lushly forested hills. The trees and plants appeared different than those she was used to in Scandinavia, or even in England or Frankia, but the land appeared very fertile. She breathed deeply and the air was sweet with flowers.

This must be the new land that the goddess Arva had told her about. She had doubted the lady's word, since Arva was not one of the gods of her people, but now it seemed that she had been telling the truth. Lagertha hoped that the rest of her promises, especially the one about having children, were true as well. It seemed she must truly be a great goddess indeed, though a foreign one, to have brought Lagertha here.

Lagertha stood up and walked to the surf. Her first order of business would be to wash off the sweat and cool off. When she had finished that she started walking down the beach. She would need to find fresh water soon. The heat was making her thirsty. Supposedly the goddess was bringing other people here, so she would need to find them as well.

Isaac didn't know how things would go with Octavia on Saturday. There had been a lot of guys who volunteered to father her baby, and Isaac couldn't see much reason why she'd pick him, of all people. But he'd at least tried, which was better than he'd done in the first few weeks since he'd arrived, so he'd take it.

Now, he was heading down to the beach to go for a swim. He knew that the salt would make him itch, and he'd have to go take a bath in the pool to get it off, when he could just swim in the pool and not have to worry about it...but he liked the waves, and there was just something about the ocean that he liked. So he was dressed only in shorts, carrying a towel and ready to have some fun.

That was when he saw the woman who had just arrived. She was hot, in a milf sort of way, but then, pretty much everyone here was hot in one way or another.

"Uh, hey," he said.

Lagertha saw the young man approaching so she walked out of water back up onto the beach. She was cooler now but her clothes were sticking to her uncomfortably. She thought he must be one of the other servants of the goddess Arva, but you couldn't be too sure when meeting a stranger so she kept one hand on the handle of her knife (which she had not yet discovered was dull).

He spoke words she didn't understand, although his tone seemed to be a greeting. "Hello," she said in her own language. "Is this the land of Arva?"

Ugh, Isaac hated knives. And he hated even more being stabbed by them. So when he saw her hand go to the knife handle he raised his hands in front of him.

"Hey, hey, hey, I'm unarmed. Not going to hurt you." Not that it mattered whether or not a werewolf was armed or unarmed, but he really wasn't going to hurt her.

Her words brushed over him, and he realized that he hadn't understood a single one of them.

"Uh, what?" Great, she was one of the ones who didn't speak English. Hopefully he'd be able to show her how to use the translator without getting stabbed.

She wasn't actually planning to stab him. Not unless he did something threatening, at least. She hadn't drawn the knife, but just kept her hand near it. The boy seemed rather soft and not threatening, although looks could be deceiving.

He spoke again in words she couldn't understand. Was there anyone here who spoke her language? If not it could be a problem.

"I don't understand you." She said. "I speak Norse."

In Isaac's case it definitely was deceiving, although he had no intention of harming her in any way, either. He didn't understand a thing she said, though, and that was certain to get them in trouble if he didn't take care of it, and take care of it soon.

Keeping his hands held up, he pointed to the bracelet on his arm.

"It'll help us understand each other," he said, as he approached. "Let me show you how it works."

She saw him pointing to the bracelet on his arm. She looked from his arm to her own and back again. They were the same.

She held her ground as he approached. Did he mean to take the bracelet? Perhaps, but it didn't seem so. He already had one of his own. She didn't know what that meant. Maybe the silver bracelets were emblems of the servants of Arva.

She looked at him cautiously, but didn't pull away or draw the knife on him.

Isaac wasn't a techie by any means of the word, but he was from the twenty-first century, so he knew plenty enough about electronics. He took a step forward and reached out to touch her bracelet.

"Let me change the settings so that you can understand me?"

Of course, she didn't understand him, but hopefully she'd get the idea that he was only trying to help and not stab him. He didn't want to be stabbed.

When he reached and touched her bracelet she took a step back.

Again a stream of words she didn't understand.

She didn't know why, but obviously he wanted to see the bracelet. She took it off and reached out to hand it to him.

Isaac was relieved that he was able to get that point across, and took the bracelet quickly. It took him a little while to figure out exactly which function made it work, but he finally did, speaking into it in French and hearing it back in English. How weird.

He handed it back to her, then.

"Here, put it back on. That should fix things."

She saw him take the bracelet, look at it carefully and touch it, but she had no idea what he was doing with it. Perhaps he was examining it for markings, although it didn't seem to have any.

Then she heard the words coming out of it and her eyes got big. How could a piece of jewelry talk?! It must have very great magic. When he handed it to her she accepted it warily, somewhat reluctant to handle an object of such power. Then she heard it repeat his words to her in her own language. "Put it back on." Part of her wanted to fling the thing away, but she complied. Although she believed in the gods and magic, she had never seen magic like this up close before, and it was a bit frightening.

"Is that what you said, 'put it back on?'" She asked, waiting for the thing to translate her words for him. "So this thing repeats words in the other's language?" If so that was a very useful sort of magic, she had to admit.

"Yeah, pretty much," Isaac said with a shrug. "Although don't ask me for the details, I'm totally not a techie." He could make the things work, but if he tried to take them apart or something he'd end up with a bunch of useless parts.

"But we can understand each other, and that's what's important, right? I'm Isaac."

He held a hand out to her, hoping that wasn't some insult in her land. Who knew?

It wasn't an insult. She got the idea what he expected and that it was a greeting. She took his hand in hers. "Thank you. It will be very important to understand what people are saying if I am to serve the goddess Arva. Are you one of her servants also?" She assumed that the bracelet on his wrist meant he was. "Are there others?"

Isaac wasn't sure if he liked being called anyone's servant, but he got what she was saying and didn't correct her.

"Yeah, I am. Just got here not very long ago myself. And sure, there are quite a few people back at camp. I could lead you there if you want?"

She was hot, in a kick-ass Eowyn sort of way, but she was also a lot older than him. Which didn't matter to Isaac, but probably would to her.

The difference in age wouldn't matter much to her. She didn't care about the age of a man as long as he was an accomplished warrior. Isaac looked soft compared to the men she knew, in addition to his youth.

"Yes, I would be grateful if you would lead me there. Do you know how many others are here?" Hopefully there would be a number of warriors to choose among if she was going to give the goddess a child.

Appearances could definitely be deceiving, as Isaac would likely be able to kick the asses of pretty much every warrior she knew. In some ways, though, he was softer than the men she knew in that he hadn't had to grow up in the harsh environment they had. His tortures and demons were of a different sort.

"Um, about thirty maybe? It's pretty even with men and women. A lot of the women are pregnant, but nobody's exclusive with anyone. If you see someone you like, you can just, well, kind of ask them. People are pretty open about that here."

Lagertha would have a lot to learn about the capabilities of some of the people here, but that would come in time.

Thirty people was fairly small village, but it was a start. At least it was enough that there should be some choice. And if many of the woman were already pregnant, then Arva's promises were likely true. She was also glad to hear that people were open about sex. After Ragnar, Sigvard, and Kalf Lagertha had had enough of husbands and had no intention of giving a man that kind of power over her again. She was here to have a child for the goddess and then one for herself. If she could enjoy herself as well that would be a bonus, but she was not interested in marriage.

"That is good." She nodded. "I want to have a child for Arva as soon as I find a suitable father."

Well, she knew what she wanted, And wasn't afraid to say it. That was comforting, actually, and Isaac was pretty sure she'd do well here.

"I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding men to help out with that," he said. "After all, that is kind of why we're here."

Isaac led her back through the jungle to the camp, which looked under construction, but still comfortable. "Here we are. You can make your shelter wherever you like."

"Good." It made sense that people would agree to having children since they had all been brought here by Arva for that purpose.

She looked around the camp. She saw two large buildings, as large as Ragnar's palace in Kattegat and a number of smaller ones scattered around it at a distance. Perhaps the smaller ones were the shelters he mentioned. She hadn't really expected to have to build her own house, although she supposed it made sense that would be expected in a brand new place.

"Is there an earl here? Is that..." she indicated the community center and the medical center next door to it "His great hall? Perhaps I should go and meet him first." If there was an earl she might be expected to pledge loyalty to him, but he would also be who she could ask for assistance.

"An Earl? Like...some rich English lord?" He didn't know any definition for the word other than that, and honestly it seemed like a strange thing to ask for.

"No, nothing like that. There's no leader here..." He hoped that was what she meant. "Other than Arva and the gods, I mean. The rest of us are pretty much equals and do what we can to make this place what we want."

As far as she knew the English didn't have earls. They called such men Ealdormen, but the position was fairly similar, and nobles did tend to be rich in any country. "Yes, a lord or leader. You have nothing like that here?" She had never heard of a land without some man claiming lordship over it, but this place was clearly full of magic and different from anywhere she had known. "Who lives there, then?" She indicated the community center again. It looked very much like a ruler's great hall to her eyes.

"No," he said, "We don't have a ruler. We all work together."

Following her gaze to the community center he shrugged.

"That's the Community Center. It's a place for us to gather, get supplies, eat together. You know, all of that. It's for all of us."

"Ah, so it is like a hall, but there is no lord, it belongs to everybody." It was a strange idea, but not an unpleasant one. And it seemed that despite the lack of a leader, plenty of things were still getting done.

"I thank you for you help with the bracelet and for guiding me here, Isaac."
