What: Having a chat
When: Thursday (backdated)
Where:
Warnings: TBD but probably low
Status: Closed/Incomplete

Scott was settling back into life on the island, and wrapping his brain slowly around the idea of becoming a dad. He wished his mom was here more than ever. He had a million questions. His mom would have the answers, Scott was certain of it, but she wasn’t here. He wandered in a fog some days. The work he was doing allowed him to get lost in his thoughts.

Today, it finally hit him, then he hit himself in the forehead. There was one person who he could probably talk to. Maybe. Other than Stiles. Allison’s dad was here. Scott hadn’t heard from him in a little while, but that wasn’t surprising knowing Mr. Argent. Scott didn’t know which shelter in particular was his, but he could sniff him out easily. Thoughts to action, as soon as Scott was done for the day he went looking for Allison’s dad.

Chris had fallen into a quiet existence on the island. Pitching in where he could, of course, but being quiet otherwise. He was still sorting himself out, finding where exactly he fit in -- he knew that he did, it was a matter of settling in. And as one of the older residents, naturally it'd take time.

He could live with that. Because it was all in the name of rebuilding. That was the most important part, not any personal issues or awkwardness or whatever you wanted to call it that he might've had. And really, the beauty of the place and the people he'd met and would meet overshadowed any need to finish settling in that there was.

He heard someone coming and stuck a head out of his shelter, only to see Scott approaching -- Scott, who looked rather like he had a purpose. Scott, who generally seemed pretty awkward in anything to do with him here. Hrm.

"What can I do for you?" he asked, looking at Scott curiously. "Is everything alright?" Because yes, they hadn't always gotten along, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to be concerned.

"What?" Scott said in surprise then got a lopsided smile on his face. "Oh, yeah. Everything's fine. Thanks." Awkward was Scott McCall. He rubbed at the back of his neck and realized his hair was getting shaggy. Ugh.

"I just...wanted to see how you were doing and..." he sighed, "...maybe ask you some questions. If that's okay."

"Yeah, of course you can," Chris said, motioning Scott to come on in. "Have a seat, such as it is." He quirked a grin. His shelter might've been a simple one, but he actually kind of liked it that way -- for the time being, anyway. He was actually a fairly simple sort of person, overall. Much of what he'd had in Beacon Hills, when it had been him and Allison and Victoria, had been largely for show and to fit a persona. Given his choice? He'd go simpler.

Maybe not as simple as the island started people out with, but that just meant he had to work for it. He could do that, though.

And then he was settling down, studying Scott, and marveling a little at the idea of Scott McCall becoming a father. Not in a bad way, no, just in a way that said it showed how the island had a way of making people just a little more adult than they might've been back home. Although Scott had certainly been through more than enough, certainly more than most adults had been. He'd still managed to retain some of that... not childishness, no, that wasn't what Chris was looking for. Youthfulness, that was it. He'd retained some of that.

And Chris could see that about him, but he could see something else, too. Maybe that was what was bringing Scott here with questions. He supposed he'd find out.

"Thanks," Scott said in almost blunt relief then followed Mr. Argent into the shelter.

He'd always been a little surprised by the high tech and detail in the Argent house. Somehow it didn't seem to fit Allison's dad. Looking around the shelter this seemed more like him. Scott would be hard pressed to say why. It just was.

"So uh..." geez, maybe he should have gone to Stiles. "You heard I'm gonna be a dad, right?"

Part of Chris wanted to laugh at Scott and his obvious twitchiness -- it was something he would've expected more from Stiles. But part of him said no, don't do that. Because really, if he were becoming a father at Scott's age, he he expected he'd have been that nervous about asking someone for advice, too.

"I did, yes," he said with a nod. "Congratulations are in order, then. Are the two of you going to raise it yourselves or are you going to be giving it to Arva?" Either was a valid way to do it, quite obviously, but each came with its own set of complications -- just one came with more of them, infinitely more.

And Chris was suddenly hit with a moment of how utterly strange it was to be asking his daughter's ex-boyfriend about if he was going to be keeping his baby or not. It was a total "what is my life, I don't even" moment. Except it didn't bother Chris, it was just one of those things that made him blink a little.

Not that he was showing it, of course. No, not in the least. If there was one thing Chris Argent was good at, it was not showing when something was affecting him. Not always a good thing, true, but at the moment that was neither here nor there.

A genuine smile formed on Scott's face. Bri was awesome, and she was really happy about having his kid. He never thought he'd ever be a dad, especially not in Beacon Hills. It was way too weird there. Sometimes he still felt like a coward for coming here instead of staying to take responsibility for the nasty crap back home. Then he'd see Stiles or Bri and now Isaac and Malia. The peace he saw in their faces made it worth it.

"Thanks," Scott said with a nod of gratitude. "We're keeping it. Bri couldn't have kids back where she came from and she wants the opportunity to be a mom." And this was the tricky part. "I'm going to be there for her and the baby," and judging by the hesitation in his voice this was why he sought Chris out.

Chris nodded thoughtfully. He could understand why someone in that situation would want to keep their child, then. "I can't imagine it's easy for you, though," he said. "Something you've never been through before. So no matter how much you want to be there, it's overwhelming."

He tilted his head, looked at Scott for a long moment. It would be easy, all too easy, for him to just turn the teenager away. But that wasn't in Chris, wasn't at all who he was. And more to the point, it wasn't what Allison would want him to do. So without hesitation he asked, "What can I do to help?"

Because he'd been through it all, had raised Allison. Had seen Gerard deal with Kate through her rebellious teenager phase -- because oh yes she'd had one, as frustrating as it'd been to their father. So whatever Scott needed to know? Chris probably knew. And if he didn't know it? He could figure it out -- or at least, he and Scott could figure it out together.

"Well," Scott said. "It isn't as if I haven't been in more difficult foreign territory, right?" Like being made into a werewolf and having to figure things out on his own. That had been way worse than impending fatherhood.

Scott sighed then as he rubbed at the back of his neck. "What's it like?" he asked. "Being a dad." His own dad hadn't been there for anything, and when he actually had tried he had sucked at it. Scott had nothing to go on here.

"It's..." Chris frowned thoughtfully as he tried to figure out how to put it. "It's wonderful and terrifying all at the same time. Because once your child is here? It's not just you anymore. You don't get to just worry about yourself. There's this other person here, this tiny little life who's entirely dependent on you."

He smiled faintly. "And you realize right away that you love your child more than anything, that you would die before you let anything happen to them. That doesn't change as they get older. Which means that it hurts like hell when they get hurt. Any kind of hurt. You want to fix everything for them, protect them from everything, and yet you know that sometimes you have to let them make mistakes and screw things up anyway because that's part of them growing up."

He looked at Scott. "And you're going to make mistakes, Scott. You and Briseis both. Little ones, big ones. But the important thing? You're going to love your child no matter what -- you just won't always know what you're doing. And you know what? That's fine. No parent does the first time around."

Scott paid close attention. He'd come here in good faith and was taking this very seriously. It had been a long shot that Mr. Argent would be willing to talk to him about this, but apparently Scott's gamble was paying off.

He let out a heavy sigh when Allison's dad was finished talking and looked less reassured. "Sounds like the responsibility of being an Alpha but on steroids," he said. God, how was he ever going to do this? He barely had his own shit together!
