WHO: Natasha Romanoff and OTA
WHAT: Natasha is getting things together to build a shelter
WHEN: Late Wednesday morning
WARNINGS: Probably none
STATUS: Complete

Natasha could do a lot of things. In fact, she could do a lot of things that people wouldn't believe she knew how to do but building a shelter wasn't on the list. She could probably have thrown a tarp between two trees and been good with it but if she was going to be here for a while, she needed more than that. Steve had shown here where the building supplies were kept and she was standing there on Wednesday morning trying to figure out what she wanted to do. She could have simply asked for help but that wasn't Natasha's way. She'd rather try to do it on her own and if absolutely necessary, she'd ask for help. It was beginning to look like that was going to be the case.

"Okay," she said, not caring that she was talking to herself. "we've got brick which means making mortar, and wood which means hammers and nails. I have no freaking clue what I'm supposed to do with either of those things." Natasha sighed and was standing there staring at the supplies when she became aware of someone approaching. She was always wary and she instinctively braces herself even though whoever it was most likely meant her no harm. Still though, you never knew.

Turning around she looked at the person and said "Hey, do you have any idea how to turn this stuff into something I can live in?"

Bucky was on his way to the community center to work there when he saw Natasha beginning her shelter. It looked like offering some help might not be amiss here. Besides, his shoulder still hurt so maybe it was better not to do a lot of heavy lifting like he'd been doing. He was a lot better at carpentry than he was when he came, and he'd had training in his real life.

He smiled at her as she turned. "Morning. Sure, I can help you make a shelter." He looked at what she had. "I might suggest using wood to start with instead of trying to do brick. That's a lot more trouble."

"Yeah I was thinking the same thing. As long as it keeps me dry I'm fine with it. Wood seems easier to manage than bricks anyway." Natasha was glad that Bucky had come along. She was still deciding who she could and couldn't trust among the volunteers she didn't know so having Bucky offer to help worked out. Despite the past, she knew she could trust him now.

"I know it doesn't have to be big, just enough room for a place to sleep and maybe a table or something. At least until things change." She didn't want to jinx things by referring to getting pregnant since that was likely to be a while. Natasha wanted to make the right choice because this was going to be her child, she was going to raise it and she wanted someone who would at least be supportive of her decision even if he didn't want to actively parent with her.

"Well, we have the tarps and we have the thatch everyone had used before that. I can work with either. But we need to get you some walls up first. What spot did you clear off for it?" He wasn't sure exactly what dimensions she was looking at here or which part of where they were standing she wanted to be her place. Bucky's own shelter had dirty floor, but him and Steve had put down some boards so they wouldn't track dirt into bed with them. Cut down on washing the sheets.

"Okay. So maybe eight by ten? That's relatively small but honestly without electricity and how the heat is, there isn't much to do here in your 'room' as it were. We have a table and bed, some pegs on the wall to hang your clothes. We have a clothes line outside to dry things and our two benches with the firepit. We spend most of the time out there to get the breeze." Plus there was light from the fire or the sun.

Thatch and tarps. Not surprising given the setting and either would be fine. Natasha looked up at the sky, squinting in the sunlight. "Does it ever rain here? I don't know exactly where we are, I was wondering if there were ever tropical storms or things like that." Maybe the gods controlled the weather, she thought. It made sense. They were the gods after all. "I think a tarp would be good for a roof especially if it rains ever."

She thought about Bucky's suggestion. "Eight by ten sounds good. I won't have much stuff. Scratch that. I don't have any stuff besides what I'm wearing." and the knife strapped to the inside of her thigh but nobody needed to know about that. "I was thinking maybe somewhere near you and Steve? I saw a couple of places kind of off to the left but behind you, near the tree line." Natasha wouldn't come out and say it but she wanted to be near friends. She was feeling a little out of sorts if she were being honest with herself and having someone familiar nearby might help. She also didn't want to be close to Bruce and Maria. That was going to take a little time.

"Apparently there was a lot of rain before Steve and I got here. I haven't seen it rain since though. I think the tarps with the thatch on top to keep it weighted a bit probably would do the trick. You could ask Finnick or Sara they know a lot about how the shelters were originally constructed. Steve and I got ours when we arrived and we improved it but it was nice already." He was still incredibly grateful for the rock shelter and that it was at the edge of camp so they had privacy. Even more so since they'd started doing things together.

"Oh well you can put it anywhere. Finnick's is fairly far into the trees. Abby is the lady living on the other side of the fence we have between our shelters. You can put yours up a ways on the other side? We keep watch at night outside our shelter, we take turns, so there is that if you're close enough for us to look over yours too." That's why Abby lived close to them. She'd felt safer knowing someone was on guard, she'd understood why Bucky and Steve needed that to sleep. "We should pick somewhere already mostly clear since it's hard clearing the land by hand." He didn't want to have to do a lot of heavy work with his arm if he didn't have to. That said, he wouldn't admit weakness to Natasha about it either.

"I talked to that Finnick guy. He's going to make me a hammock. He also said he'd come by tomorrow to help out. Seems nice." From what she'd gathered he was one of the volunteers who had been here the longest so he knew a lot about what went on. "Well now that I'm here I can take turns with you and Steve keeping watch. I'm a light sleeper anyway so I don't mind. The two of you shouldn't have to do it all the time." Natasha would feel better if she were doing it too. It was habit and not one she wanted to break.

"Then the other side of you sounds like a good place. It looked pretty clear if I remember correctly so we shouldn't have to do much." She didn't have any desire to clear the land by hand so every little bit helped. "I think your idea for the roof sounds good. Hopefully we won't get another monsoon."

"Finnick is incredible. I trust him the most of anyone here other than Steve." Bucky respected the hell out of Finnick, and had trusted him enough to have sex with him. "Him and Chloe are the best, I count both as close friends. If he's offering to help then you'll be in excellent hands."

Bucky wasn't sure how to answer her. He didn't know her, or trust her. Steve did, which was good, but Bucky was still paranoid enough. "We got it. Nobody else here keeps a watch but since we don't need as much sleep as regular people it's not a big deal to split it at night."

Nodding, Bucky picked up a load of boards and put them on his right shoulder and started walked in that direction. "I wish our shelter was off the ground. If we were building it ourselves I'd have elevated it six inches in case of that sort of thing. That said, I haven't heard anyone else complaining about that being a problem. We did put wood down to plank the floor so there wasn't so much dirt everywhere and in the bed. It wasn't hard to make our own makeshift broom to keep it clean in there. " Steve and Bucky both were tidy here. They didn't have much but what they had they took care of.

Natasha had an inkling of some of the things Bucky had been through and she easily recognized that he didn't trust her completely yet. That was fine, she understood. Her trust on him was based solely on the fact that Steve trusted him but that didn't mean she wasn't a little paranoid. Paranoid should be her middle name, she thought.

"Well if you decide you want some relief, let me know. I don't mind," she said and that was the end of the discussion as far as she was concerned. At least he was helping her and that seemed like a good sign. She certainly had no intentions of harming him. "I like the idea of something on the ground. I'm not a fan of the same being tracked into my bed either. We can put some of these down for that." Natasha had also picked up some boards and started following Bucky toward the spot they'd discussed.

"Okay. Thanks for the offer. You'll want to make yourself a firepit too with rocks. There's enough in the mostly dry creek bed to make it work with some mud." It wasn't that far of a walk out to his and Steve's shelter then to the mostly already clear area a bit farther to the left. He didn't think she'd be able to hear them talking or doing other things at that distance, that being said, he edged her a little bit farther. They were still easily in sight of one another.

"Yeah, wait till you have to wash all the bedding in the pool at the base of the waterfall. That's a joy." He chuckled. He didn't like washing clothes but at least him and Steve split the chore a bit.

"A fire pit? Here? For cooking I assume? Not for heat surely," Natasha wasn't a fan of heat, she preferred to be cold but that wasn't an easy thing on a tropical island. "but whatever you say. You've been here longer than me so I trust your judgement."

She laughed when he mentioned doing laundry. "Yeah I thought about that. I don't look forward to that especially since I'm guessing we don't use detergent if we bathe in the same pool we wash our clothes in." It sounded a little gross especially sine Natasha was pretty sure other things went on in that pool too but maybe she could find another place somewhere else on the island.

"Well at night it's rather dark, there's no other light than firelight. So we keep ours going all night, every night. We both have our projects we work on outside on watch." Bucky shrugged. "It's nice to have a way to do things outside. We also cook over ours but most people eat with the group. Since we need more food than others I spearfish and we have our eggs from our chickens we eat."

Considering the detergent issue, Bucky shrugged. "Steve and I have used the home made soap here to wash our clothes. We did that back in Brooklyn before at times. It's a chore but it's easier with someone to help. Maybe we'll be able to get a wash board or something. I think other people are helping with group laundry? But we've not taken advantage of that." Bucky was more comfortable not letting the few articles of clothing the two of them shared and owned to be handled by others. They had four outfits total between what the gods had given him and what they arrived in so that was a lot more than most people had.

"Well that sounds like a good idea. I don't know what kind of projects I can do but it would be nice to have some light in the evenings." She couldn't help but wonder a bit about why Bucky and Steve had chosen to keep themselves fairly isolated from everyone else. She understood Bucky being anxious and she definitely understood the paranoid since she had plenty of that to spare but Steve was a good friend and she didn't want the two of them to think she was going to bother them or case them any difficulty.

"Look...Bucky.." she began. "I know you don't really know me and I also get that it's hard for you to trust people. I don't trust people either very easily. The list of people that I know I can trust isn't very long but Steve's on it. I'm not here to try and hurt either of you, I'm not here to cause any kind of problems for anybody. I'm just here because I wanted the chance to do something that I could never do if I hadn't come here. It's a very long story and maybe someday I'll tell you guys about it but that's the truth. It's just that..." she hadn't planned on telling them separately but it looked as if it was going to have to be that way. "I was seeing Bruce back home for a little while, I come from a time period after you and Steve so he doesn't know any of this. Long story short, he left because of something I did even though I had to do it. Nobody knew where he was and then I come here and he's here and he and Maria are having a baby so that's really awkward." she shook her head. "and we're friends and eventually I'm sure that it won't feel so strange but right now, it's hard and I don't want to lose two more people because they think I'm going to hurt them. I'm not, I promise. I'm just trying to get my footing."

It wasn't often that Natasha came out and was totally honest with someone. She'd been that way with Bruce but that was in the past. She could be honest with Steve and her instincts told her she could be honest with Bucky so she just said what she needed to say.

"Well, you can really do whatever you want. I am teaching myself to wittle with some of Finnick's help. I'm also sewing diapers for the upcoming babies and making a few outfits to be used for ones that will be given over to Arva since we're not sure when she'll come take them. I've made some baskets and I can teach you how or make you some. Steve draws a lot and he's been experimenting with trying to make some pottery but I don't think he wants that announced to the world yet." Bucky smiled. Of course Steve would be nervous about being seen as producing an inferior product and not want it seen until it was perfect.

"It's up to you, like your jobs here are. I've been helping out with the animals and working on the community center. Before that I was working with Finnick on his cabin. We also have our chickens and our little herb plots we planted so our fish and eggs would have some flavor. The cooks at the main camp are doing a good job with what they've got too, we usually eat there with what seems like a normal portion and then get extras at home." Bucky really did think of their shelter as home. Eventually he and Steve would have a cabin, but for now it was home sweet home.

He frowned at her words. "I didn't say you were? I know you're Steve's friend and that counts a lot for me. That said, I don't make friends real easy or hand out my trust. I am here helping you, and I'm sharing all the information I have about here with you. That's about all the help I have to offer. Did you want something more specific from me?" He wasn't sure what she would expect him to do here. He didn't know her, and time spent together would be what it'd take to consider her a friend.

Oh no, you've been great! I'm just...this place threw me a couple of curves right off the bat and I keep feeling like I'm sticking my foot in my mouth," she made a face and shook her head. "but no I appreciate everything you've told me so far. This is completely different from anything I've done before and I've gone off the grid but this is even further off the grid." Natasha had been in deep cover before but there had always been safehouses or contacts or at least some kind of running water. This was a whole new ball game and if she could just get control of her damned emotions, she'd be fine.

"I can sew, I'm not great but I know how. I had to learn that. I'm a decent cook so I'll see if I can help with that although I don't know anything about raising animals. That one someone is going to have to teach me." Now would be a great time for Barton to show up, she thought. He would know what to do with chickens and cows and whatever else they had here. "Do we have any pigs?" she asked. It had just popped into her mind. "I have no idea why that came into my head."

Bucky nodded, giving her a more genuine smile. "I know what you mean. This wasn't anything I'd experienced either. But at least it's not snowing, so that's something." He'd been so fucking cold in a lot of places he'd been kept. It was a relief not to be cold again here. "It took me awhile to settle in but it's nice here. Just give yourself some time and don't rush anything."

"No, no pigs unfortunately." No bacon to be had. "We have cows, sheep, goats, and chickens, plus wild animals like rabbits, bears, etc." He smiled at her. "I can help you with the animals if you'd like. I found it really helpful, being part of making things live instead of-" He broke off but he thought she'd get it. "Cooking would be good, there is not a lot to use so it's very primitive. Hopefully we'll get some cookware from the gods. Sewing is good, we need help with making clothing."

"I've been cold far too much in my life. A tropical island is a nice alternative." She'd grown up in Russia and it was cold more often that not and her time with the KGB had involved a lot of snow. Yes this was much better. "I'm not very patient," she made a face. "so letting myself adjust is kind of not easy but I will try."

Her smirk turned into a grin when he mentioned bear. "I don't know if you've ever eaten it but bear is pretty good. I had it a few times when i was growing up but I wouldn't begin to know how to prepare it or cook it. I could kill it but that's about as far as I could go." And she wasn't sure if there even any guns to be had. She didn't think asking how well the camp was armed was a good thing to do right off the bat. "I'll ask around then and you can show me farm stuff."

"Hmm, part of being in our previous line of work is how to be patient. It's a real benefit here because things move so much slower here. With everything having to be made it's much more work for smaller pay offs. That said, it's a relief to me, to be away from the craziness that modern life had presented. Though having a fan would be nice." He smiled at her.

"I have not had bear. There are people here who are doing a lot of hunting apparently the food stores are well stocked. People are using bows an arrows for most types of hunting, or the ones with super human abilities use those. There're werewolves here." That one had and still does surprise Bucky. "But sure I can teach you about the animals. Steve and I have our chickens as pets, so that's something too. Someone has a dog, I still am not sure who it belongs to."

"Whoa....werewolves?" Natasha raised an eyebrow. "Considering all the things we've both seen and the fact that I know for a fact some strange stuff exists out there, I gotta admit that freaks me out just a little bit." She'd heard enough stories when she was a child about witches and werewolves and vampires but while she believed in aliens and knew a few, she still couldn't wrap her head around were-creatures. "Well as long as they don't want to eat me, I'm good with that. Bows and arrows, huh? Makes me wish Barton was here. He'd be good for something." Natasha missed her friend but she knew there was no way he'd ever show up here. He had a family and he was happy, there was no reason for him to come but still, she missed him.

"I need to meet these chickens," she laughed. "I can't imagine Steve with chickens. Although he's always been able to do whatever he set his mind to so I shouldn't be surprised.. The dog hasn't tried to go after the chickens has it?"

"I find it disturbing too. All I can think about is those experiments HYDRA did on people and animals. I think they'd have went crazy for that kind of hybrid creature. Ruby that left, she could turn into a wolf at will, but she wasn't a werewolf." He didn't know who Barton was, perhaps that guy with the bow on Steve's team? "Well, there are some good archers here. I'm decent but I'm only a so-so fletcher at best."

"Steve liked the idea. They're safe from the predators because we keep watch and the gods gave me a fancy chicken coop to keep them in. It's really high class so our girls and their babies live in comfort, style, and safety. The dog hasn't come around our camp." He still didn't know who it belonged to.

Natasha felt a chill when Bucky mentioned HYDRA. She always would, she was sure of it and the experiments they had done were horrible. "She must have been a shapeshifter then. I've heard of them but I've never met one." and it didn't look like she would this time either unless Ruby came back.

"I haven't seen a dog. Hopefully he's friendly," she said. "Hopefully nobody will bother your chickens. Humans or animals." Natasha couldn't imagine anyone bothering chickens but you never knew. She stopped and looked around. "How about right here? This looks like a good place."

"Probably. I'll miss her now that she's gone." He sighed. It was strange how people came and went here. "She said she wasn't going to come back." Since some people did return.

Looking around the spot she indicated, Bucky could see the advantage of it. His own shelter was far enough away that she'd not be able to hear them talking or doing other things unless she came out of her 'property' as it were and closer to theirs to spy on them. "I think here works."

Bucky laid the boards down he'd been carrying. "We should get the shovels and work on clearing what isn't cleared yet." It was going to be a bit of back breaking work but given it was relatively clear here not as bad as it can be. "I have a hatchet that Finnick gave me that you can use and I've got my bowie knife."

She liked the spot. It was close enough to Steve and Bucky that she could visit them if she wanted to but it was also isolated enough that she could have her privacy. Natasha valued her privacy and even though she'd have to sacrifice that here to a certain extent, it was going to take time.

"I've got my knife too," she said. "so I think we're good on tools. So I guess all we need is to go get some shovels and we can get started. Let's go." she smiled at Bucky and started back toward the direction from which they had come.
