It was tough to keep her feet moving Kaylee was so fascinated with what she saw around her – so her coveralls, work boots and colourful shirt weren't exactly what one would take to a beach, but she'd sort of woken up here, a little groggy and momentarily confused – but it all filtered back to her as she got to her feet and let the scents and sounds around her filter in; that she'd wanted to be here, she'd wanted to do some good, especially after what they'd seen and been a part of, after losing Wash- she didn't want to run so much any more and here, even if she didn't quite know why, she felt safe, she felt protected. She wanted to be part of this enough she'd volunteered.
Simon was her safe place on Serenity, when the nightmares had come; of Reavers or false memories of losing others in the battle to get the signal out haunted her sleep, she'd wake to find him, and he'd comfort her – true he was also a distraction, any time he'd earnestly volunteered to help her in the engine room, work on the actual engine almost never got done. She felt a pang at the thought of the crew, though Simon was here, on his way to find her – her memories of goodbyes to the crew weren't quite sad but they were very foggy, weirdly distant for someone just having arrived.
Though she was sure she'd meet up with him before finding the settlement, wherever it was folks had started to build, Kaylee strolled slowly ahead, wanting to take in the paradise around her, listening to the lapping of the waves at the shore and peering over at the water which shone jewel-blue.
