"What about when they stop laying?" Finnick asked. He knew that hens lay fewer eggs as they got older. The few people he had known in District 4 who had chickens only kept them for a few years before they replaced them and ate them. In his world, chickens were simply a means of turning corn (food) into eggs (better food), and no one could afford to feed a hen after the egg production slowed down.
"I guess I get that. We had a cat once." But the cat kept rats off the boat, and mostly fed itself by hunting.
"You got a lot of stuff! I was here a long time before I got that much. I mean, it's awesome that you did. And it's awesome that Arva gave you specifically what you asked for. It never occurred to me to ask directly like that, although they usually have a pretty good idea what we need."
