WHAT: Random meetings? Steve’s down with being put to work.

He’d been here for a few days now; long enough to explore and to get a real understanding for the land, but maybe not quite so long where he’d had any real kind of opportunity to get to know the people. It had been surprising, a bit, to realize there were people he knew already here on the island even if they apparently had their own good reasons for being here (although, frankly, Steve was mostly unsure of how Tony was surviving at all without technology. Steve wasn’t even from a time when it’d seemed all that important and even he was missing things with on and off switches).

But even with knowing a select few people, Steve could easily say he didn’t know everyone. And he sort of thought he should. That was just the kind of person he was.

So, he made it a point to sort of wander and mill about around the encampment. That way he could stop and talk to anyone he came across, or offer to help anyone who might need any sort of labor or heavy lifting done. At the very least, he was good for that.

Maria and Steve

Maria was getting around a lot better than she had been. Two weeks of taking it easy had her in a lot less pain. She still wasn't supposed to put weight on the leg, but sometimes she forgot. Sometimes she "forgot", too. She was supposed to use both makeshift crutches, but sometimes both were a phenomenal pain in the ass. Maria would wait until she was certain no one was looking and switched to just one.

And she was absolutely forbidden from going to any of the work sites. Primarily, it was because if she couldn't help her version of helping was falling back into a supervisory role which wasn't usually appreciated. After being on the receiving end of death glares once too often she kept herself away.

Today she took the shepherd puppy off to throw the ball to work out some extra energy from the stupid ball of fluff. Maria had learned that if the dog saw the ball before she got herself into a stable position it led to her losing one or both crutches as the puppy lurched into them to try to get the ball. That had been the intention with hiding it in her shirt, but everything went to hell rapidly.

The ball fell out. The puppy went for it which knocked the one and only crutch she was using out from under her arm, and Maria's balance was entirely wrong. Her weight went on the leg with the fracture making her yelp then start to topple over.

Like some sort of terrible cliche from all the rom com movies and books combined, Steve Rogers was there just in time to unironically take hold of Maria's arm in order to keep her balanced, upright, and more or less off of the leg she shouldn't have been putting weight on in the first place.

"You know," he said, sounding a little apologetic, like he knew just how smug he was about things, but couldn't seem to help himself anyway. "Everyone seems really friendly around here, Agent Hill. I bet you could have asked for a hand and any number of folks woulda been by just to help you out. Especially with a puppy involved."
