The one thing Eddie really felt comfortable about in this place was the hard work. That was something that Eddie really knew - something that made sense to him when a whole lot of other things didn't. Sure, he was no stranger to random hookups - no dhampir who had spent as much time at St. Vlad's as he had was - but the whole thing about having kids - well, that was creepy. Okay, no that was mildly terrifying. Maybe more than mildly. Eddie wasn't ready to be a father, in any sense of the word. Because he knew that he couldn't give any child of his own to Arva. He knew what it was like to be given away at a young age - he knew intimately the feelings of abandonment that went along with that. And he knew that he couldn't do that to a child of his own blood. Eddie didn't even know who his own father was - he refused to be equally unknown to any child he conceived.
Which meant, of course, that if he was going to have a child here, he needed to be in some kind of relationship with the mother. And Eddie wasn't that good at relationships. Actually, he'd never had one. And since Mason's death (and even more so since he'd been censured for killing one of the Moroi), Eddie wasn't in much of a place to promote himself. Hopefully, Arva would be happy enough with his hard work that she'd be able to overlook his other...deficiencies. In fact, he'd been working extra hard with just that hope.
That was actually what he was doing now, carrying water back to camp. Without the luxury of plumbing, all water had to be carried in from the waterfall. Although people didn't often consider it, water was heavy. Eddie figured that the buckets he'd hollowed out from wood held about ten gallons each. That meant a little more than eighty pounds per bucket plus the approximately ten pounds each bucket weighted. With one in each hand, Eddie figured he was carrying about 180 back to camp each trip. No wonder he'd taken off his shirt several trips ago. Even with Eddie's fitness level and the extra strength of dhampirs, it was exhausting work.
But even aside from bathing (which most people seemed to do at the source), people needed a lot of water. Drinking, cooking, cleaning....it was needed for just about everything they did in this hot and humid environment. And carrying it waws something that Eddie could do and probably not even screw up. See, Arva? He was willing to help in pretty much every way he could, even if he wasn't ready to be a dad yet.
His hands were sweaty and about to drop the buckets, so about two hundred yards from the camp, he stopped, taking a deep breath as he sat down the buckets and wiped his hands on his jeans.
