WHO: Jackson Whittemore and OPEN Maria Hill
WHAT: Working
WHEN: Tuesday morning
WHERE: Main camp, near the construction
WARNINGS: TBD
STATUS: Open/Incomplete

Jackson might have been a self-centered narcissist, but one thing he wasn't was lazy. Others might have disagreed with his priorities, but he'd been out every morning at dawn, working until the sun went down. Jackson wasn't a stranger to hard work. When he'd been in Beacon Hills, he'd worked hard to be Captain of the lacrosse team. He'd worked out in his free time, drilled, ran - anything necessary to keep himself in the best shape possible. It had been one of the reasons he'd been so furious when McCall had simply swooped in and taken from him what he'd earned with the sweat of his labor.

When Jackson wanted something, he was willing to work for it, and the work here - in building a sewer system, or in completin construction of the medical center - well, it was what he wanted to do. At Derek's suggestion, held paused work on digging the sewer trench. Less because he wanted to and more because it seemed like a waste of effort to dig when there was an excavator. Unfortunately, he didn't know how to use it and everyone seemed to want to get the medical center built first. So that was what Jackson would do.

Even though it was still morning, the tropical sun was hot, and Jackson had already worked himself into a sweat. Taking a break to get a drink, he then took his shirt off over his head and threw it over a stump where other people had been throwing their various stuff. He then stretched, feeling good to be free of the sweaty garment. He knew he looked good without it, so there was no self-consciousness as he stretched out his arms, and then got back to work.

So Tony Stark was here. Maria was thrilled. Happy. Excited. In no way at all. Back home she knew how to deal with Tony. Pepper was there to keep Tony from annoying people too much. Rogers could usually take his focus more often as well. Here? Here she was sleeping with Banner, and Tony was going to have a field day with that. Worse, in an effort to stave off Stark's ribbing Bruce called a hiatus on the sleeping together thing. Maria was in a bad mood.

She showed up early at the construction site in an effort to work off some of her frustration. Her uniform could use a good cleaning and some repair so she was wearing one of the outfits that showed up yesterday. Shorts, running shoes and a tanktop with the SHIELD logo over the right breast.

She wasn't expecting to see anyone this early and kind of came to a halt when she spied Jackson. A sigh came from her as she shook her head then decided she could handle this. She continued into the site as she pulled her hair back into a ponytail. "Jackson, isn't it?"

Jackson looked up when he heard her voice, and raised an eyebrow. She was one of the older women here, but from a brief glance at her he could tell through her clothes that she was fit and in her case the years and extra experience might be a bonus. He's never been a boytoy for a cougar before, but hey, there was always a first time.

He straightened, not the least bit self-conscious of being shirtless. Anyone in their right mind - make or female - should be staring at him. Gems worked hard to look this good.

"Yeah?" He asked, dragging a hand across his forehead. She'd better not have come here to give him a hard time or something. That was the definition of not sexy.

No, she wasn't here to give him or anyone else a hard time. She was here to escape being given a hard time herself. However, she might have had a few choice words for Jackson if she knew he was calling her a cougar.

It was as if she didn't even notice he was shirtless for all the attention she paid to it. Maria had held an entire conversation with Nick while he wasn't wearing a stitch of clothing. Jackson would have to break out into song and dance to get her to blink.

"Thought so," she said flatly on her way to see what had been left unfinished the day before. "Early riser?"

That earned Maria a shrug.

"Huh guess so," he said, as if he'd really never thought of it before. But he'd always liked to go to the weight room before school started, just to make sure he was always in prime shape. After all, when you wanted something bad enough, you were willing to work for it. He supposed it wasn't all that different here.

"There's enough work to be done. Figured we might as well get started on it."

Back home Maria sometimes had to be ordered off duty by Fury to make her take some down time. Once, he even had her security clearance wiped for forty eight hours. She was just as bad about working here, but she was getting better about finding time to relax. Ahem. Now, however, with Tony showing up and Bruce calling a hiatus she was planning on working her frustration off at the construction site of the obstacle course.

"Time is running out," she said as she walked toward a stack of materials nearby. "This needs to be finished as of yesterday. Was there something in particular you were working on?"

Another shrug. And really nothing in the way of an answer.

"Whatever needs to be done," he said unhelpfully. But that was how he saw it. There was stuff that needed to be done, he was strong and had muscles, so he'd do it.

"Neither of the girls are due for a while are they?"

Yeah, one of them was a girl he'd loved deeply, and had let get away by being a dumbass. But he didn't feel the need to mention that.

"Yeah," she said as she reached up to lift some of the materials down for her to use. "But that's no reason to take our time. We have to factor in mistakes, set backs, accidents..."

As if on cue, everything went suddenly wrong. Maria had her foot braced against the base of the pallet holding the materials for leverage. The removal of material shifted the weight just enough for the sand beneath the edge of the pallet to erode to adjust. Unfortunately, it also caused two more things: Maria's foot slid along with the sand and the pallet sunk...right onto her shin, trapping her as she screamed out in pain.

Luckily, Maria had managed to have her major, horrific injury in the presence of a werewolf who had been strong and athletic before he'd been a werewolf. And despite how cold he could act sometimes, Jackson was a guy who was there when he was needed.

With strength that was definitely not human, he pushed the pallet off of her shin long enough for her to free it. Then he let it down, and lifted her to get her out of the way, in case the pallet shifted again.

He looked worried as he looked at her leg, and bit his lip.

"Damn. You don't heal either, do you?"

Maria didn't question Jackson's strength. Even if she weren't in large amounts of pain, she was trained to act and had worked closely with people who were known for lifting and throwing trucks. This didn't surprise her.

Using her hands and good leg she got herself out from under the pallet. She didn't fight being picked up, in fact adjusting to make it easier and holding on.

Since she was wearing shorts instead of the protection of her SHIELD uniform her shin was gashed open and streaming blood. Maria was in that initial state of being injured that it didn't hurt as much as it should so couldn't assess how bad it was.

"No," she said through gritted teeth, her voice tight with adrenaline. "No healing. Just human."

Unfortunately, Jackson was unable to heal others. He himself would heal quickly, but he could do very little to help her. Although...there was one thing that he could do.

He put his hand on her shin lightly and took a deep breath, remembering what Isaac had taught him about how to do this. He gasped, and the darkness of the pain blackened the veins of his arm almost to his elbow.

He stayed like that for a long moment, until finally he had to pull away.

"That should help for a few minutes. We've got to get you to a doctor."

Maria flinched when he touched her leg and she knew all new levels of pain. Oh yeah. This was bad. A lot worse than when she'd knocked her shin open on the log. She bit back the sound she wanted to make, but after a moment she didn't have to...for more than one reason.

Her lips parted for what she saw happen on his arm. Panic started to set in wondering if she'd been poisoned somehow and it was transferring to Jackson, but then the pain melted away to nothing. Maria's eyes widened as they lifted to look at him instead of his arm and her leg.

"How did you do that?" Nevermind that she was still bleeding.

"Just something Lahey taught me," he said, a little gruffly. The discomfort had nothing to do with her, but of the memories of when he'd done this before. Life wasn't always easy for omega werewolves, and more than once this ability had been used to give a peaceful death. Sometimes that was all that could be done when the hunters were done with them - the times when they weren't merciful enough to just end them themselves.

Jackson's face was dark for a moment, then he lifted her in his arms again, suddenly wishing that they did have the medical building completed. Didn't seem right that someone would get hurt while building it.

"Look, we're going to go find one of the doctors. They'll know what to do."

After all, that was what doctors did, right?

There was a story there, and it wasn't a good one. Maria had enough of those tales of her own. If Jackson wasn't telling, she wasn't asking. Some memories didn't need to be talked about no matter how much you couldn't get rid of them.

She tensed when he lifted her, expecting pain but there was none. Whatever he'd done the pain was gone. For how long, she didn't know. "Geez. I'm calling you Morphine Lad from now on." She smirked a little then nodded. "Not Banner," she said. Tony would no doubt be with Bruce. "Jones or Simmons or whoever."
