WHO: Martha Jones & Derek Hale
WHAT: Date!
WHEN: Monday evening, before sunset
WARNINGS: TBD
STATUS: Closed/Complete

There were a limited number of things two people could do on the island once they had decided to go out on a proper date. It might have seemed impractical considering what they were meant to do on the island, but honestly Martha didn't care. She wasn't about to shag every thing with two legs and a penis because that was how repopulation happened. It might have angered the gods, but Martha wasn't about to change her values to appease them. She imagined that part of the reason they approached her was because of the type of person she was, and that meant not changing for them.

She was happy that Derek agreed to go out with her. She felt that maybe she had left things hanging with their last meeting. She had asked for help with the triage area and ended up kissing him only to stop him before things got too serious. She didn't want it like that despite the fact that she was sure everyone on the island was doing things in that exact manner. Still, she wanted to make it up to him and she wanted to get to know him better. She had never really gone for the rugged type when it came to men, so being attracted to someone like Derek was a completely new experience. She liked it, but she had to admit that she was a little nervous as well.

"Hey," she said when she saw him approach. "So I did a little fishing earlier, and caught some fish if you can believe it." She turned around and looked at the small campfire she had made on the beach. "Made that so we can cook said fish. Unless you like it raw..." Since he was a werewolf, but she didn't say that out loud. She just gave him a very pointed look before she smiled. "Come on then," she said as she grabbed his hand to take him toward the picnic she had set up.

If he was honest, the fact that Martha had stopped them when they'd only gotten as far as kissing; the fact that she had wanted to try to go on a date or get to know him before jumping into bed with him, so to speak, was actually really refreshing. Since his arrival, Derek had been trying the whole casual sex thing and he'd slept with a handful of women. Sure, sex was good, there was no denying that. But for Derek, without the actual connection, that's all it was. Good. It would never be great. So to meet someone who was potentially like-minded was something of a relief he didn't realize he needed.

Today was...maybe not the best day for it, because Larissa's arrival had thrown him for an emotional loop he wasn't ready for, but she was asking men for help with her shelter in return for favors and well. Clearly she'd moved on. So, putting her out of his mind was probably better and it wasn't like this was a wedding, it was a date, anyway. He just wanted to get to know Martha and see if they clicked. If they did, then they could keep trying to see how things went. If they didn't, well. She was a nice woman and he liked her, so at least they could still be friends. Derek showered in the waterfall after working all day, using some of Jack's shampoo and conditioner, and then he headed to the infirmary where Martha had said she'd be.

"Hey," he greeted in return with a smile, his hair still wet and flat against his head, but hey. He couldn't be perfect without a mirror and some pomade he'd never admit to using every morning back home. His grin broadened at her announcement. "Oh, nice! That's awesome." He laughed a little, ducking his head briefly and then looking up again to shake it. "No, I don't really do raw," he replied. Werewolf, sure. Neanderthal, no. If he was in human form, he cooked his food. "At least not when I look like this, I don't." With her permission, he moved further inside and gave her hand a little squeeze. "This is so cool, I wouldn't have thought of this, you know? Look at you, clever girl."

Martha took the idea of getting to know someone before she bedded them very seriously, and the first step in that was to make an effort in whatever way possible. She was the one that had approached Derek, after all, so why shouldn't she be the one that set up their dinner or planned their evening? She was a traditionalist when it came to dating, but definitely not in the roles of men and women in said date. Martha was not, nor had she ever been, content in simply following someone else's lead. She did so with The Doctor because he was the expert, but once she was comfortable she took charge on more than one occasion.

"Clever," she said with lilting laugh. "Well, I have been called that, yes. But it seemed appropriate, ya? We're on a veritable paradise of an island, the least we can do is enjoy it with a picnic on the beach. Though I'm definitely going to need help cracking those coconuts open, if you don't mind. You being all muscles and what not." She reached up to pat his arm, and admired his bicep. "Hmmm," she said with a small smirk before she made her way to the camp fire.

Martha settled onto the palm leaves she had gathered to use as blankets for them to sit on. "How have you been," she asked sincerely once they were both comfortable. She wrapped the de-scaled fish in coconut leaves, and lay them on top of the rocks that were in the flame. They were hot enough that cooking the fish on them would be quick and easy. "I mean, I know you've been busy with the medical facility," which Martha greatly appreciated. "But outside of that. Things have been okay with you?" Martha's questions were more than just an attempt at small talk; she was genuinely concerned and interested in his answers.

Nodding, his smile still in place, Derek cleared his throat. "Oh absolutely. I like it," he said, laughing a little when she touched his arm and made the mention of him being made of muscles. Yeah, he was willing to admit that he was a pretty big guy and the fact that, back home, he spent his overwhelming amount of free time working out just to pass the hours he wasn't fighting for his right to live, didn't really hurt. "You like that, then?" he asked, curious. Some women didn't. Some women felt intimidated by his size and he wasn't even as big as some of the other werewolves he'd known over his years, but all the same, he would've understood it, especially with Martha being as petite as she was. "But I can do that, yeah, sorry. I can do the coconuts," he replied, backtracking to answer the request she'd made before the playful comment.

Following suit, Derek lowered himself down to sit beside her and he watched as she started cooking the fish, admittedly impressed that she knew how to do that all on her own. He wouldn't have known how, that was for sure.

"Oh, yeah," he agreed with a nod, planting his hands on the ground and leaning his weight back against them a little. "I pretty much spend my entire days on it. I wake up and go for my morning run, change back to this form and get dressed and then I work until the sun starts to set. It gives me something to do," he explained. It also helped take his mind off the fact that he'd scaled back on random, unattached sex rather a lot in the past week or so. He was a lot less interested in it now that the novelty had worn off. Derek liked to get to know people and trust someone before sleeping with them, typically; something he'd set on the back burner upon arrival on the island only to realize that he didn't really like setting it on the back burner.

"Things have been okay, yeah. As okay as they can be, I guess," he replied. Between Larissa's arrival earlier that afternoon throwing him off and all the drama surrounding the Beacon Hills crew he'd wanted so badly to leave behind that he'd left the country back home only to end up surrounded by them again here...well, Derek was a little tired. "What about you? Settling in all right and getting on okay here so far?"

Martha couldn't say whether or not she liked muscles on a man. It wasn't particularly the first thing she looked for when she went out with a man, but it wasn't a turn off either. Martha found that the things that attracted her to a man were always rooted in their personality, and from there she found their looks to become more or less attractive. She was perhaps backwards in that sense, but it seemed to always work out in her favor in the end.

"I do," she said with a grin. "On you. It suits you I think," she said in response to his question. "I mean I like it on you," Martha added with a laugh. She wasn't making herself very clear, but by now Derek knew of her tendency to ramble on. "What I mean is I don't go looking for muscles on a bloke in particular. But if I like someone, and they happen to be fit, then I like it. Does that make sense?" She shook her head at herself. What sort of doctor was she when she couldn't even explain herself very clearly.

"I am. I'm enjoying it. Though my mind's been focused on getting the medical facility set up, but there's only so much I can do, you know?" She let out a sigh, and she wished there was a way to speed things along. But she wasn't gifted with special powers. There were times she wished The Doctor was there with her since he always seemed to find the answers to all their problems. But then again she could not imagine him on an island where you were required to have sex. Something that she had yet to engage in.

"You, though, you sound like you've got a lot on your mind, ya?" She looked over at him for a moment, and looked away when she thought he might have caught her stare. "Just look out over the ocean there, and focus on that. That's all that exists and let whatever else is bugging you slip away. Right now this is all we have." She leaned back onto her forearms and looked at the sun setting below the horizon, and closed her eyes as she listened to the waves washing upon the shore. It was nearly perfect.

As Martha struggled to formulate a response to his mostly rhetorical, but semi-curious question, Derek grinned, watching her fondly. She was cute. He was noticing that she was a little more awkward-adorable than the women he tendered to gravitate toward, but he told himself that maybe that was a good thing. Maybe he needed the change. For certain, he needed a clean slate and, with Martha, he had one. “I know what you mean,” he finally replied with a smile, letting her off the hook.

Even though she acknowledged she couldn't do as much work on the medical facility as some of the others like himself, or even as much as maybe she would like, Derek still thought that the fact that she was helping at all was admirable. Most of the women weren't. Derek didn't fault most of them, assuming that they felt they wouldn't be useful, but sometimes even someone to hold something while he was nailing it into place or marking his measurements on it would be appreciated and anyone could manage to do that. He tried not to be disappointed in the fact that so many of the women were actively embracing the gender roles placed upon them I their previous society. Derek was used to a matriarchal system which, even after all these years since the death of his family, was still so deeply ingrained that he couldn't help feeling underwhelmed by the women on the island so far with few exceptions. Martha was one. She knew her strengths and weaknesses and she compensated. She was driven and she had had no problem leading his efforts to help her set up the temporary triage center. Sara was another, carrying herself confidently and training people to be more helpful by harnessing their potential skills and expanding upon them. Arva should've picked more like Martha and Sara, in his opinion. He'd have been a lot more interested in the women if they were all like Martha and Sara.

“Yeah, but the fact that you're helping at all is impressive,” he pointed out. “You are in a pretty vast minority there.” He shrugged a little when she suggested there was a lot on his mind. There was perpetually too much on his mind. Derek's eyes shifted to look at her only to be advised to look out to the ocean. “You would be surprised just how often I'm out here doing that very thing,” he said with a bit of a sigh. “It does work temporarily, though. I'll give it that,” he agreed as his eyes turned out toward the sun setting on the horizon over the ocean.

Derek took a deep breath and then looked back at Martha again, listening to her steady heartbeat, watching her serene expression, smelling the calm that radiated off of her, and he smiled a little. She was really beautiful. He wondered if she knew that about herself. Too many beautiful women seemed genuinely not to. Pushing himself up again, he reached for her with a tentative hand brushing fingers beneath her chin to guide her to look back at him before he moved in to kiss her, slowing to a stop just shy of actually doing so, to give her the chance to turn away if she wasn't feeling it.

Martha had never been the girl that was content to sit on the sidelines. She took charge, formulated plans, and actively engaged herself in the implementation of said plans. It was in her nature even as a child. Between her brother and sister, Martha was definitely the most outspoken.

She smiled when Derek complimented her efforts, but like the werewolf she found herself disappointed in how many of the women on the island were content to keep to the "female" roles. They were building a society from the ground up. This was their chance to change the rules they all had grown up with. It didn't have to be patriarchal any longer. Equality in the truest sense should have been their goal, but she supposed that it would be hard to move away from something that was so ingrained in their world. Martha, for one, would do her hardest to make sure that any child she raised in this new world would not be oppressed by gender rules.

When Derek's fingers touched her chin, however, all thoughts of societal standards went away. She followed his lead and turned toward him before she leaned in. Her breath was deep, but her heart was beginning to beat faster. Martha stopped when he did, and smiled. A part of her had contemplated saying something to him, but she realized that the moment didn't need any words. She closed the distance between them, soft lips pressing against his for a second before she parted them to deepen their kiss. Martha moved a hand up to his face, fingers tracing along the stubble that ran along Derek's jawline. A soft, pleased sound came from her throat before she moved her hand to the back of his head to pull him closer.

Her heart rate had picked up, Derek noticed, as she came nearer. He could hear it thumping in his ears and, until she smiled, he couldn't tell whether it was the good sort of nerves or the bad sort, so he hesitated. The smile, though, and the way she leaned in a little further to close the gap between them sealed it for him.

The fingers under her chin moved with the rest of his hand to hold the side of her face, palm pressed against her jaw to keep her near as she deepened the kiss before pulling him closer. Derek saw that action and raised her a bolder one of his own.

Martha was small, even if he hadn't been graced with the strength of a werewolf. He let his hand fall from her face and reached for her, meaning to lift her into his lap to even out the height between them so that neither of them was craning their neck too far to accommodate the kiss that he had already sort of melted into with ease.

It was easy kissing Derek. There was familiarity in his touch, and the say he filled her senses completely. She had been leaning closer to him, but then he lifted her up and set her in his lap. She liked being close to him, and for a moment she thought that maybe it was just because she wanted to feel close to someone. Martha had closed herself off for so long after The Doctor's rejection that it almost felt as if she would never have feelings for anyone ever again. But Derek was changing that for her. She wasn't sure if he was "the one", but he was opening her up to the possibility of it. Perhaps she would find love again.

Martha wound an arm around Derek's neck so he could cradle her easily as they continued to kiss. It wasn't full of passion or hunger, it was sweet and easy going. No judgment or expectations. They were enjoying the moment, and it felt as if it was something they both needed. The sound of the waves eventually melted away, and all Martha was focused on was the man that was tending to her lips ever so expertly. She was enjoying it. They were the only ones that existed at that moment, and that was all that mattered.
