Four days of nonstop rain had most of the people on the island feeling out of sorts and on edge. At least the main camp area stayed dry the past few days so that they could begin building the medical center, but Sydney was glad she suggested another bonfire for this evening, figuring that everyone could use an opportunity to relax and socialize. Maybe by fostering the sense of community even more, they would appease the gods and finally get the sunshine back.

There was plenty of food available for everyone and the fire was blazing for both light and warmth. Off to one side, the finished boards were set up for Cam's bean bag toss game. They really did need to figure out some additional leisure activities they could partake in here without equipment. It was too bad they didn't have a radio.

Stiles was a fairly social person, so he enjoyed the bonfires and having a chance to just hang out and mingle with people. It was especially nice to spend some time away from the people he knew from home. Apparently it was impossible to completely escape Beacon Hills drama, even when you were in paradise.

He had no intention of sharing any stories of his own tonight, so he sat quietly near the fire and listened to the other people who shared. It was fascinating to hear about the places some of these people were from, especially the ones like freaking Bruce Banner who he had grown up reading comic books about and had no idea was a real person.

The conversation he and Lydia had a while back, about him possibly being interested in guys, was on his mind too. If he ever wanted to indulge that curiosity, this was the place to do it, but the idea of actually putting himself out there like that was kind of terrifying. He was barely equipped to approach girls. The thought of approaching a guy who may or may not be interested in guys... yeah, he had no idea how that would even work.

With the help of the girls, Cam had managed to get the bean bag — more accurately, sandbag — toss game all set and he had set it up a little ways away from the fire, explaining to anyone who had wanted to learn how to play if they didn't know already and after a few games, he left the others to play it. It was weird, but this place was weirdly starting to feel a little more like home. It wasn't in a way that he could really explain, but he'd gotten comfortable here. It was kind of nice. Sure, there was drama, but it didn't have anything to do with him and anyway, people were people. It was bound to happen. He tended to be a peacekeeper back home, jumping in to try to mediate between opposing sides, but he'd come here to get away from his life back home for a while and so he thought it more prudent to step away from some of his old habits, mediating for strangers being one of them. It wasn't always welcome at home; he doubted very much that it would be welcome here.

The bonfires becoming something of a regular occurence was actually reassuring. In spite of all the aforementioned drama that was unfolding, people were still coming together as a community for something each weekend. Whether the rest of the volunteers realized it or not, Cam realized what the bonfire really was: it was their very first tradition separate from their customs and cultures and lives back home. They'd created a tradition of a weekly bonfire to gather, communicate, share stories, and get to know one another and that, to Cam, was a huge step forward toward becoming a society. Progress.

Seeing Stiles sitting on his own in front of the fire, Cam plopped onto the ground nearby. "Is it cool if I sit here?" he asked. If the guy was over here because he wanted to be on his own, Cam wouldn't have a problem with that and he'd just move somewhere else. But if the guy was sitting over here because he hadn't found anyone to talk to for the moment, then Cam might as well remedy that, right?

"Of course," Stiles said, giving Cam a brief smile. If he really wanted to be alone, he wouldn't have come to the bonfire. And Cam was a good guy. Stiles knew he needed to make an effort to spend more time with people who weren't from home. As much as he cared about Scott and Lydia, he had come here to get away from the drama back in Beacon Hills and it seemed to be following them all here. Making friends with new people couldn't be a bad thing.

Especially since Cam was very attractive and Stiles had noticed him mention on the network that he might be interested in a threesome with a girl and another guy sometime. Ever since seeing that, Stiles had wanted to ask him if he had ever done anything like that — had ever been with a man in any significant way — but that was hardly the kind of thing that came up in casual conversation. Maybe he could figure out how to bring it up now.

"It's really cool that you managed to figure out how to build a cornhole game," he said. "We definitely need to come up with more leisure activities."

"Cool," he replied, glad that he wasn't going to have to move, in any case. He would've felt kind of awkward if he'd realized belatedly that he was encroaching on the guy's personal space and quiet time, after all.

He looked over at Stiles when he spoke up about the bean bag toss and Cam pointed right at him. "Cornhole!" he repeated, "I fucking knew it had a name and I couldn't remember. Yes! Thank you! Shit, where were you three days ago?" he laughed.

Stiles had a good point and Cam was totally conscious of that, he'd been trying to figure out new things they could do without taking too much time away from his man hours toward building the medical facility. "I'm gonna work on a floating platform for the lake next," he offered up. "Just something to fuck around on out in the lake instead of being limited to only swimming," he added. "But yeah, we need more stuff to do."

"I'd offer to help, but I'm all thumbs and I'd just end up getting hurt," Stiles said ruefully. He was well aware of his limitations and wasn't going to aspire to be more than he was. There were plenty of other ways he could be useful around the island that wouldn't risk him ending up with bodily harm.

A floating platform sounded like it could be fun though. "I'd kill for a chess set," he admitted. One of the downsides of this place was having too much time to think. Stiles was the kind of person who needed to keep his mind busy.

Cam gave him a little smile. "Everybody has their strengths," he said. He'd seen Stiles around, but he wasn't really sure what the other man had been working on because he himself had been so tied up in what he was working on that if Stiles wasn't working on building the medical facility — he wasn't — then Cam knew that he probably wouldn't have noticed anyway.

"A chess set would be cool. I'd even take checkers," he replied. "I don't know if we'd have to like carve the pieces by hand, though, I don't know that we have any precision tools. That'd be kind of out of my scope..."

"Checkers would probably be easier to make," Stiles agreed. "Even though it doesn't require quite the same strategy as chess." At least it would be something they could do. Other than the obvious.

He shrugged and tried to figure out how to bring up the whole 'into guys' thing without being completely awkward. "So, you have your eye on anyone here tonight?" Stiles asked, glancing around at the crowd gathered around the bonfire.

Cam nodded. Yeah, but sometimes easier wasn't the same as better, he thought, and he got the impression that Stiles was trying to be more polite than to just say that on so many words. "Yeah, easier, for sure," he agreed, "but yeah. It isn't as much fun."

Lifting his eyebrows, Cam have a facial shrug at his question. "Me? No, not really... I don't really do the chase so much. I've never been all that comfortable with it. I let people approach me and take it from there. I'm kind of huge, it intimidates people sometimes if I take the initiative. It looks aggressive when I don't mean it to be and I try to be, like, conscious of that, you know?"

He shifted to roll his shoulders a little, stiff from a long day of work, and then he looked back at Stiles. "What about you?" he asked.

Cam was a giant dude and, if he was going to be honest, Stiles was a little intimidated by his size himself, but he thought Cam was a decent guy and a good looking guy.

"Not really," he said. "I mean, I'm not exactly the smoothest guy out there. There are a lot of really attractive people here, but I never really know how to approach anyone."

He was being very careful with his word choice and avoiding the use of pronouns.

Cam nodded his understanding. That was the thing about it, though, wasn't it? They could feel liberated enough to post on the network to pimp themselves out, but that came from behind the safety of a screen and welcomed to people to then approach them. It was different, in person.

"Yeah, I think half the problem with that isn't the ability to be smooth or not so much as the fact that everybody's different and what might be an attractive conversation starter for one person might put off another, so yeah, I totally get that," he agreed. "...that's the other reason why I don't really approach people all that often proactively," he admitted with a soft laugh.

"Plus, with a place as small as this, the last thing I want to deal with is rejection and having to see that person all the time," Stiles added. Especially if that person was a guy. Especially if said guy wasn't interested in other guys. That would be even worse.

He noticed that Cam hadn't used pronouns either, but he wasn't sure if that was by design or just happenstance. He was probably overthinking the whole thing, but that was pretty much what Stiles did best.

Cam lifted his eyebrows. That was something he hadn't actually even thought about, but which was a very good point. "Yeaaahhh...that's, yeah. That's a good point. Hadn't actually thought of that," he admitted.

He couldn't imagine ever actually attempting to be open about his curiosity only to realize that the guy was a heterosexual. Back home, that could get somebody's ass kicked pretty easily. Cam was a big guy and hard to beat physically as such, but being a social pariah would hurt even more.

"Well, a guy like you probably isn't used to rejection," Stiles said with a shrug. "Guys like me though? It's pretty much our natural state of being." Cam was a good looking, athletic guy who probably played sports — and actually played them well, unlike Stiles.

Cam shrugged at that. "I've had my fair share of rejections just as much as the next guy," he countered. "But yeah, I've also been pretty lucky more times than not, I'll give you that. But see, that's half your problem right there, man," he pointed out, shifting so that his whole body faced the other man.

"If you go into it with a 'guys like me' negative attitude, that shit radiates off you like a repellent. You can't go into anything with that mindset."

"Yeah, you're right," he admitted. "I'm just not used to being the guy that the girls go for. I'm more the funny sidekick." It was especially tough when his best friend was a werewolf and he hung out with a bunch of other supernatural types.

With a smile, Cam nodded. "Yeah cool, that'd be cool," he agreed. He didn't know much about Stiles, but if the other man thought they'd have interests in common, Cam was always open to new friends. Friendship was a good place to start with anything, in his opinion.
