WHO: Malia Tate and OPEN Chester Adams
WHAT: Another melancholy werecreature
WHEN: Friday
WHERE: Not far from her coyote den, in the woods
WARNINGS: None
STATUS: Complete

Malia had spent most of the morning throwing up. That was how things seemed to work, now. She spent the morning throwing up, three or four times. Then she'd be okay for the afternoon, then evening would come and she'd start throwing up again. This seemed like more than was normal for pregnancy, but what did she know? She'd never been pregnant before.

She was in her few hours of feeling okay right now, and she knew she needed to have something to eat. So she headed out into the woods, looking for a rabbit, or a squirrel, or something that would feed her without taking a lot of effort. She didn't see anything right away, so she weakly sat with her back against a tree, and ran a tired hand through her hair.

She felt so alone.

In a place this small, it was becoming more and more apparent to her that she really didn't know how to interact with people. She was always saying the wrong thing, and making people afraid of her, or making them think she was bad in some way.

And she wasn't bad. She had feelings. She cared. She didn't want to be alone. She wanted to have friends and she wanted to form connections with other people. But she couldn't figure out how humans did that. What she usually got? Strange looks and people slowly backing away.

A tear dripped down her cheek, and she knew that it was because of the pregnancy. Well. Mostly because of the pregnancy. Okay. At least half because of the pregnancy. The other half was...well...she was miserable right now. She had all this inside of her, and nobody she could really talk to. And even if she did? She wouldn't know how to talk to them in a way that would make them understand. She still thought in emotions, in scents, in coyote language, and there was just so much she couldn't translate.

Another tear fell and she hugged her knees to her chest, finally letting go and sobbing into her knees.

The last thing Malia had ever wanted was to be found like that. In the wild, weak creatures died, and what made you weaker than crying your eyes out like some pathetic little girl? When she looked up at the voice, there was anger in her eyes - at least as much of it directed at herself as at the other person...

Who must be new.

Malia didn't recognize her scent, and she recognized the scents of most of those around here. There weren't that many of them to remember. Human. And there was a lingering scent of death and decay that hovered around her, although she herself was perfectly alive. She could hear her heart beating just fine.

She wiped her eyes angrily.

"Just stupid being pregnant," she said, more sharply than she meant. Of course, it was partially a lie. Being pregnant was part of it, but part of it wasn't that, too.

Chester came a little closer, but kept a short distance between the two of them before lowering herself onto the ground to sit, tucking her legs beneath herself Indian-style. She knew it sucked being caught at a low point, but she also knew that she owed Sam to pay it forward to someone else for all the times her second-in-command had helped her get her head back together when she was upset back home.

Though, the girl said that she was pregnant and Chester drew back her lips slightly, jaw clenched. "Gotcha," she said softly. "Well...pregnancy hormones'll do that to you, I guess."

She held out a hand. "Name's Chester," she offered. "I just got here. Anything I can do to help?" she asked. "Wanna bitch and moan to an impartial party or anything? Or just vent? Or...you know, tell me to fuck off and I'll go on my merry way?" she offered, a little smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth at that last bit.

Malia wasn't usually the type to bitch and moan about this sort of thing. She usually kept those things to herself. Maybe it really was the pregnancy hormones making her feel this way...or at least making her feel this way so publicly.

"The baby's father," she started. "He's my friend, right? Or, I mean, I want him to be my friend. And he got really upset last night, like, really really upset. And I wanted to be there for him, because friends, right? But I think I just made him more upset and he didn't want anything to do with me. I don't know what I did wrong. I was just trying to be supportive like a friend should be, but he didn't want to talk to me."

She sighed, looking away obviously hurt.

"I don't understand people. I don't understand them at all. I understand coyotes and how to be a coyote and that's it."

Well, okay then. Bitching and moaning to an impartial party it was, apparently. Chester was quiet and she listened. Having zero context on the whole situation that surrounded the specifics that the girl was talking about, though, she wasn't sure how much accurate insight she could offer the poor girl.

The last bit threw her off, though. "...what do you mean you understand how to be a coyote and that's it?" she asked, confused. Was this girl like raised by coyotes or something. Awkward. No wonder she was struggling to understand people.

"As for baby daddy, though...I don't know the whole story, but it sounds to me like maybe he just wanted to be upset on his own. Like maybe he just didn't want to talk to anybody? I get like that sometimes, anyway." Usually when someone in group was killed and she'd had to put a bullet through the brain to keep them from coming back a walker.

"Well," she said, not entirely understanding the question. "When I was a coyote, things were a lot easier, see? I mean, I slept during the day, and then at night I left my den, tried to find at least a rabbit to eat, was back in my den by dawn. Trying to stay warm, trying to find food and water, stay away from hunters..."

She shrugged.

"It was easy. Everything made sense. Nothing makes sense now. Humans think about too much stuff."

Chester blinked. "I'm sorry...when you were a coyote?" she asked, lifting her eyebrows. "Like...you were a feral child and you were raised by a pack of them or, like...literally...?" Because that sounded like some seriously crazy shit and what the hell? To be fair, zombies had seemed like some seriously crazy shit that was straight out of the movies, but she'd lived through the outbreak, so she supposed nothing was really that crazy, at the end of the day.

Malia really didn't understand why she was so hung up on this point.

"Yes, when I was a coyote. And no. When I was nine, there was a car accident and I turned into a coyote, ate my mom and sister, and ran into the woods where I lived as a coyote for eight years."

Did that answer all of her questions? Could she move on with the important stuff now?

"Wow," Chester replied, looking as shocked as she felt. "Okay. Didn't know that was a thing, sorry, I got distracted," she said. "So...I can't really identify with that but it makes sense. I mean, that you think being a human is more difficult. It is. It's a pain in the fucking ass," she agreed. "I guess that's the price we pay for being among the more 'intelligent' species on the planet," she finished, making air quotes with her fingers around intelligent because, honestly, in her opinion that was entirely subjective.

In Malia's opinion, it was pretty damned subjective too. Humans could be so freaking stupid. In fact, that kind of seemed to be their natural state.

"Yeah, well, I liked being a coyote. I really didn't want to change back."

She hadn't been given a choice in the matter.

Chester lifted an eyebrow. "...so why did you?" she asked, sounding as curious as she felt. If she'd liked being a coyote — and shit, who wouldn't love to shuck all responsibility and just be a goddamn coyote? Chester would've done it — why the hell had she switched back?

"Scott made me," she said simply. "He's an Alpha, and he...well, long story short, he roared and since he's an alpha and I'm not, I didn't have a choice in the matter."

She obviously wasn't happy about that. At all.

"That's kind of a dick move..." Chester replied, making a face. Again, without context, she could only go by what the other girl was saying, but still. It sounded like a dick thing to do, based on what little information she had. "Boo, Scott," she added, wrinkling her nose.

Taking a deep breath, Chester shifted out of Indian-style seating. "You seem pretty okay now, so I should probably leave you to your thoughts, but give baby daddy a day or two and then try talking to him again. If it's a sore subject, he probably still won't be into it if he's anything like me, but at least he'll be cooled off a little; maybe enough to explain that that's why."

She pushed herself up to her feet. "I hope you feel better, sweetie."

Malia nodded. She wasn't content, but she was starting to feel like she needed to work this out on her own. And she had appreciated the distraction, if nothing else.

"Yeah. Thanks."

She hoped she would too. Sooner rather than later.
