Who: Chloe and Nick
When: Friday evening
What: Fish Dinner
Rating: TBD but most likely low
Warnings: TBD but most likely none
Status: Complete

Chloe was learning the challenges and benefits of being here. As with every other puzzle presented to her, she charged in head first without flinching. Experience had taught her that this could and had led to trouble, but there was no Luthors here, no Brainiac. Here, her curiosity was to her benefit. She tossed herself into learning new things, where and how she could help, and what her physical limitations were.

Part of her education here was learning that in order to eat one had to hunt, fish and forage, none of which she had ever done before. Her idea of foraging was finding the perfectly ripe tomato at the Whole Foods. At least she could tell what fruits were edible, but she couldn’t live on fruit alone without some dire digestive issues. Fortunately, a moment of whimsy had her lay a challenge down to that massively flirty guy, Nick, and he’d let her know of his success. Amused, Chloe went out to meet him.

She found him near a fire and paused for a moment to get a solid look at him. Handsome enough. Runner’s build. Tall if she didn’t miss her guess, but then again everyone was tall to her. He had that bad boy edge that you couldn’t exactly define, but noticed. First Jack. Now Nick. Apparently, she had a type. Chloe shook her head at herself then continued on. “So what’s on the menu? Rock lobster? Sea bass?”

Chloe wasn't the type to question how someone got something done. She had her own methods about doing things, and preferred it when people didn't look over her shoulder during the process. As long as it got done, who cared about the how? Sometimes it was safer that way.

"Oh my god, really?" She was astonished! She expected the fish sure but not actual seasonings and stuff! The wonderful smells hit her as she got closer. "Wow! I'd say you went above and beyond what the challenge called for. I'm impressed."

She made sure she wasn't in the chef's way, but she tried to peer at everything he was doing with obvious interest. Chloe could cook, but this was something short of magic. For this she'd have needed a recipe, a real oven, a spice rack and a glass of wine.

Nick didn't see what he'd managed to do as anything spectacular. The werewolf just couldn't fathom just scarfing down some fish. He needed more food than that, to being with, so he defaulted that other people needed more than just that little bit too. If Chloe thought this was impressive she needed to see the mountains of food Nick could consume in a sitting. Seriously.

"I'm a big eater." Nick explained, looking back down at what he had over the fire and rotating the potatoes again, deciding that they were done. So, off they game, sliding the spuds onto the leaf plates that he'd gotten....one for her and two for him. "And because I'm a big eater, I decide everyone else is too. Seriously, you should see the massive amounts of bacon that my pack and I can put away." Nick laughed at himself

"I didn't mean the amount," she said with a laugh as she sat down. "I meant the effort. I mean, most guys would have just caught a couple of fish, prepped it and cooked it on a stick over a fire. You..." she made a broad gesture with her arm to indicate the whole spread, "...you went all out with the seasonings, potatoes and stuff. Where did you find a Whole Foods on the island?"

She accepted the leaf plate with an eager smile lighting up her eyes. Everything really did look good! "Pack?" She asked in curiosity.

Nick couldn't help the face that he made. IF he was making food, then he was going to make food that tasted good...and that someone wanted to eat. He couldn't help the look on his face. "I had to make something that was actually tasty to eat. What's the point if it's bland, boring, and in no way actually satisfying, hm?" He teased.

Only to promptly follow that up with a shrug. "I just followed my nose." Nick, goofily, took a sniff of the air. "It lead me to what I needed." And it was the truth, after all.

"I'm a werewolf." Nick figured maybe Chloe hadn't seen that bit just yet, but he wasn't hiding it. Removing one of the fish that was finished he stuck the stick in the ground. "So, I'm used to living with a whole mess of other werewolves off and on. Don't touch that yet, it's hot." Nick tacked the last bit on about the fish he'd removed, taking a careful look at the others, multitasking.

She giggled for the look on his face. "Nothing wrong with having discerning taste and pride in your work. But I may have to borrow you when I start cooking." The warning was meant as a joke, but if he was willing to help find herbs and spices she'd totally take the help.

The potatoes were hot as well. Chloe risked some tender fingertips to break hers open to cool. As timing would have it, Nick dropped the werewolf thing at that moment. Chloe's brows shot up as her eye lit with her insatiable curiosity then she had to yank her fingers back from the potato to shake the sting off it.

"Seems to be a lot of you guys here," she said. "I assume the legend about the full moon is just that or things will get really interesting here."

Nick couldn't help the grin on his face at her giggle. He, after all, was a ladies man through and through. "Exactly! Food is so good, it should have some effort put in, and I'm always available to sniff out whatever might be of use." Nick promised. "I could probably gather enough to bring here for the garden."

Looking at Chloe, Nick tilted his head to the side. "Careful." He warned again, not wanting her to really burn herself as he moved to remove the rest of the fish from the fire. "There are definitely a good few here, don't know all of them, but for me full moon is just legend and story. I change whenever I need to get my hey doggy, doggy on." Nick joked.

Chloe burst out laughing. Her blonde hair bounced as she shook her head. "Oh my god! That is so demeaning! I mean, you might as well have said something about chasing sticks." She giggled easily able to imagine some wolf with a big doggy grin wanting a stick thrown.

Her amusement bowed before her curiosity leaving behind a sparkle in her eyes as she tilted her head. "Do you retain your awareness or is it a full immersion into the wolf?" She was betting on awareness herself, assuming a full loss of higher thought would be dangerous for everyone.

Nick couldn't help the snort that escaped at her laughter. He had always had a sense of humor. About everything. And that included about being a werewolf. He couldn't take himself too seriously, and he had no intention of having other people do that for him, or worry. "I mean, I could go for some fetch some days." Nick waggled his eyebrows, playfully. "My inner wolf's gotta run sometimes." Nick teased, winking at the girl.

He knew that people were curious about werewolves. If he weren't one he probably would have been too, and he was definitely curious about others. "I've got awareness, though, definite wolfish instincts to go with it. That's just a part of me." The tall werewolf shrugged before checking the first fish that he'd taken off the fire and then moving to slide it onto her plate, along with her potato.

She giggled again as she shook her head. "You are horrible," she accused him with a wag of her finger. "But hey if you want to run I wouldn't mind playing along."

Chloe was curious about everything. It got her in trouble a lot back home, but that never deterred her. She was aware that her investigative nature could be offensive so she looked a little sheepish as she continued. "Tell me to back off if I'm asking too many questions, but..." she grinned eagerly, "...do you think I could see? Some time?"

She absently plucked at the fish he put on her plate, took a nibble then looked at it as if she had forgotten it was there. "Oh my god that's good!"

Nick couldn't help that his grin grew at her words. Maybe a little horrible. Mostly playful, though. "Maybe I'll take you up on that some time. I'm pretty good at making sure I run enough not to get the inner wolf itchy." Nick shrugged, very much used to taking care of this kind of thing. Unlike Elena he wasn't the sort to put it off. It had always been a part of his life, and he wasn't the kind to fight it.

Moving to split his own potato open finally, Nick managed not to react overtly to her preface. He had an idea of what was coming, so when he looked up at her he wasn't upset, but he didn't have that wide smile on his face either. "You can see my wolf side some time, but not the change to it. I mean, I am an incredibly adorable black wolf with dashing brown dusting over my fur, so that's the best part of it." Nick grinned, charmingly.

He didn't want anyone to have to see him change because to someone who wasn't used to it, he was positive that it would seem....well, awful. The sight and sound of the transition weren't fun to watch, and he wasn't going to expose anyone to that.

"Anytime," she said before popping another piece of fish into her mouth. This was a feast compared to what she had been expecting, and was really glad she'd laid down her challenge. Definitely worth going out on a limb!

Chloe held up a hand as she shook her head. "No. I totally understand." Not that she actually knew why he was refusing to let her see him change. She thought that would be fascinating since she'd never seen anything like that before. But she wouldn't press if he didn't want it. For all she knew it was embarrassing or something.

"Adorable and dashing, huh?" She grinned at him. "This I have to see."

Nick gave it a moment before he ripped a bit of meat from the fish, popping it into his mouth, nodding appreciatively at the taste. It wasn't as good as what he could have done at home, but here it was pretty damn tasty, considering the lack of a pantry. He'd have to work on fixing that eventually because food was important to him.

"Understanding an pretty. You're a force to be reckoned with, Chloe. And smart, forgot that, because the actual change isn't the best part to see, anyway." Nick winked, purposefully. He didn't want to dwell on the change. And he didn't want to scare someone who wasn't a werewolf by detailing that his bones had to break and reform in the process. "I will let you know the next time I'm going to be trotting around in my fur coat so you can see me in all my shaggy glory."

She inclined her head in gratitude for the compliments. Chloe wasn't really used to getting them, but she had enough confidence she only blushed when they were entirely out of the blue. Nick was a flirt. She'd figured that out from day one so it was par for the course. That wasn't to say she didn't appreciate them, however.

"You'll have to let me know what kind of etiquette there is for interacting with you in all your shaggy glory," she said with a chuckle, but she meant it. She knew wolves had their own language of sorts, pecking orders and protocol. She'd rather not assume something and get her fingers nipped off.

Nick went for a piece of potato next, despite the fact that it was still slightly hot. He tore the chunk off and popped it in his mouth, making quick work of it...having more than a little bit of hunger, being what he was. "Just don't pull my fur and we're cool. I don't like fur-pulling." Nick reassured her, picking out some of the fish and pepper stuffed inside to slip into his gaping maw, starving, honestly.

He was a growing pup. Only not really.

"I think I can remember that," she chuckled.

She was making short work of her meal not necessarily from hunger like Nick, but for how amazing it was. Her mind did make not that utensils were something of a must have at some point. It shouldn't be too hard to whittle some from some drift wood or dead fall.

"You don't have to answer if you don't want," she began. "Recall the stipulation of telling me to back off. Why did you volunteer for this?"

"Then you're golden, Chloe, positively golden." Nick joked, chowing down on the fish, and even giving himself a second. He was a werewolf, so he could put away a lot of food. And, honestly, when cooking at home he probably would have eaten maybe even more than this.

It wasn't lost that Chloe was eating her's too, which Nick was counting as a win. It was easy to tell that his current companion was a curious girl, so Nick was preparing for more questions, and despite not wanting to think about what had happened before coming here, he didn't see a reason not to answer. "It's complicated, but a breakup mixed with newfound knowledge that I might actually want kids some day played a pretty big part in it. What about you?" Nick turned the question back on her, continuing to eat, but watching her as he did so.

"Ouch," she said with sympathy. There was understanding in her eyes and the gentle smile that curled her lips. Talk about bad timing. At least she hadn't had the maternal urge hit after Jimmy. That would have made things even worse, and it was bad enough with the guilt she carried.

Having her question turned back on her but a brief haunted look in her eyes before she turned them down to her fish. She never liked talking about her stuff even back home, and had become the queen at deflection. She just hadn't expected it that quickly.

"A chance to come live in a place where casual sex is not only accepted but encouraged?" There. Shallowness. That would do. Except it didn't really ring true in her voice. Casting herself as a would be slut damaged her pride a little. "Who wouldn't want that?" Her brows raised as she looked at Nick to see if he was buying it.

Paige was not a topic that Nick wanted to get into, really. She was a part of, and yet outside of his world. A witch, who knew about him, and yet not someone that he could have been with long term.....no matter how it had felt at the time. So, the deep, dark nagging urges and voices that came from their time together...mixed with Logan's situation. Yeah, they had been a pain in Nick's ass.

Being here, though, gave him some chances he wouldn't have, and he wasn't unhappy here in the least, so it was a good thing.

Nick laughed a bit, the smile on his face only a half one, but nowhere near to the point of arguing with her. He'd let Chloe have her answer despite the fact that she gave off some of the signs that read as untrue. Lying to a werewolf...particularly one who wasn't a newb wasn't exactly easy. "I am guessing someone who isn't into only monogamous non-sexual relationships. So...nuns? Monks? That type?" He joked, figuring her reason was just more private and probably not easy to actually share.

She could tell she hadn't fooled him one bit, but he was being nice and letting her have her lie. The smile that came to her face was colored with gratitude. No, she didn't want to talk about Jimmy or Davis. Ever. She had this whole happy girl with her feet on the ground thing going on. It wouldn't make any difference for anyone to know exactly how broken she really was.

"Well, if I see a cathedral being built then I'll worry," she said joking back. "Meanwhile, this place is way better on the ego than Metropolis so I think I'll stick around."

Nick was working his way through the last bit of his second fish and then moving onto the third, intermixing potato along the way. And somehow he managed to do it with a smile between bites, even with conversation going on. Nick couldn't help the small snort, though, at the joke. "I think that is definitely one of the big signs to look for." The werewolf winked.

"Never heard of Metropolis, but I'm going to say that this is better than most places, otherwise we wouldn't be here." Nick pointed out, semi-sagely, considering he was still nibbling at food as he went.

"That's not the first time I've heard that," Chloe said after another bite. "Metropolis is the largest city in Kansas. Something like Chicago but with less of a gangster history." She chuckled. "It was big. Loud and sometimes smelly, but it was home."

"That sounds like the opposite of the sort of place that I'd want to hang." Nick responded with a little bit of a snort. "No offense, but loud and smelly....no thank you." Nick gave a playful gesture toward his nose before moving to polish off his potato, and happily so.

"Thank god you're a country boy?" Chloe chuckled as she took a final bite of the fish. The meal was more filling than she thought it would be, and she set her plate aside. "Well with as sharp as you say your senses are I can understand that. I mean sometimes the smell and the loud gets to me. It would have to be ten times worse for you."

Nick snorted at her words, giving a shrug. "Maybe not full-on country, but close enough." He winked before going for a bit more of his food. Chloe definitely seemed to understand just how tuned his senses were. It was the sounds that always got Nick the most, though.

"Probably so. Being a werewolf has it's pros and cons." He could think of more than a few of the cons, actually. Nick shrugged the heaviness of the subject off easily, keeping his mood up, despite the reminders of home. He noticed, though, that Chloe was finished with her food.

Swallowing his food, Nick sat up straight, a shit-eating grin on his face before gesturing to the plate she'd just sat aside. "I think that means a job well done. And that I win the challenge."
