Questions had flooded Scott’s mind sparked by these pregnancies and the talk he had with Briseis. He was glad Derek was here to go to with his questions. That conversation had been good, confusing and bad. He got some answers. Some of those had led to new questions. Some of those were answers he didn’t like. Some of the answers confused the hell out of him. He needed to talk to a few people, a list that was steadily growing and included a certain goddess. But first on that list was Stiles.

Scott went in search of his best friend hoping he wouldn’t find him hovering over Lydia. He still wasn’t ready to talk to her. Every time he thought about it the anger broiled right back up. He didn’t want to try talking to her until he was certain he could do it calmly. He felt bad that she was in her current condition and he couldn’t be right there to help her and Stiles, but he felt it was better he keep his distance and not upset her while she was pregnant. Meanwhile, he sent a text to Stiles asking to meet with him alone. Just in case.

It would be difficult for Stiles to be hovering over Lydia when she was barely around. She told him she was going to spend time with a friend, which he assumed was code for going to hook up with someone so he didn't press for details, and got back to their shared shelter after he fell asleep. Then she was up and out early for her training session with Sara, so Stiles hadn't even really talked to her.

He was picking some fruit and nuts when he got Scott's text and told him that they could meet near the peach trees to chat. Being here was getting to be a lot more stressful than Stiles anticipated when he accepted the invitation from Arva. Part of him was glad to have his two closest friends, but another part of him thought that it might be nice to have a totally clean, fresh start. Maybe if no one from Beacon Hills was here, he would have accepted Finnick's advances, seen if... no, he wasn't going to let his thoughts wander down that road.

Using his shirt as a makeshift basket, he was shirtless when Scott came into view. "Hey, man, what's up?"

Scott looked up when he heard Stiles. His brows lifted a moment before he started to laugh. "Dude, you really need to be in the sun more."

He did note the look on Stiles' face. Geez. What did Lydia do now? Only she had the capacity to put that look on someone's face. Now Scott was really glad he asked for the one on one.

"Shut up, dude," Stiles replied, though his tone lacked any sort of heat. He was super pale but the lack of sunscreen on the island made him a little nervous about spending too much time in the sun. The last thing he needed was a serious sunburn.

He really didn't want to talk about what he was dealing with, especially the part where he was thinking about guys, so he offered his best friend a peach. "What did you want to talk about?"

Scott chuckled for the expected response, but wow. Stiles was in a bad way if that was all the come back he had. He'd pry his way eventually, but for now he needed to give info.

"Remember how the Hales are all natural born weres?" He accepted the peach which immediately reminded him of Briseis, but he'd get to that. "I figured maybe we ought to know how that happens so I asked Derek. Were with a human there's a fifty fifty chance, but both parents being weres pretty much guarantees a were baby."

Stiles nodded. That made sense to him from a mathematical standpoint. He remembered doing those square things in biology class where you figured out if traits would be dominant or recessive. "Well, Isaac and Malia are both weres, so their kid will definitely be a were then. Unless it's not the same for bitten wolves."

The idea that his best friend might have some other agenda for the question hadn't occurred to him yet.

"Derek didn't differentiate so I assume it's bitten or natural." Scott paused for a moment to bite into the peach, wiped the juice from his chin as he chewed then swallowed quickly. "But yeah. I think it's safe to assume Malia's kid is going to be a were. They aren't keeping it so Derek figured no worries, but what if once they're grown they get put back in play here?"

He wasn't volunteering his own reason for wanting to know. Yet.

"That's a long way off," Stiles pointed out. Even if the kids aged more rapidly under Arva's care at the same rate as the pregnancy, it would be years before they could join the rest of the group. "And I assume that Arva is prepared to handle whatever unique needs the children of her volunteers have."

After all, she selected them all for a reason.

"Yeah, sure. But I kind of think we should know for sure." He hadn't wanted to say this to Derek, but he could to Stiles. "It's a kind of paradise here, but we've already seen that not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Can we be sure time moves the same wherever Arva will raise them, and what if they come back resentful for being given up?"

It wasn't a pleasant thought, but he felt it could be possible. And living in Beacon Hills had taught him to plan for the worst case scenario and be pleasantly surprised.

There was only one way Stiles could think of to know for sure. "You should talk to Arva," he said. "If she has the ability to know when we do or don't want to get someone pregnant, maybe she can also determine if a child does or doesn't inherit the were gene."

As for the resentment thing, well, he had no idea how to answer that.

Scott nodded readily enough. "I figured, and she's on my list." Not that he was looking forward to talking to a goddess again, but it was necessary. He wanted answers.

"The other question is do we tell Isaac and Malia? Derek said not to. That they wouldn't want to know and that it's none of my business."

"If they want to know, they can ask Arva themselves," Stiles pointed out. "And Isaac's Mr. I Am More Prepared Than You so it's entirely possible that they already have.

Scott sighed. That whole thing had been a clusterfuck, and he still wanted to tell Stiles Finnick wasn't mad at him. It's on the ever growing list.

"Yeah, I know," he said, not without sympathy. Isaac had been pretty preachy on that conversation. "Derek made it clear that he and Isaac were better off far away from Beacon Hills. That Isaac isn't pack. Derek even said he and I were never friends, so we're on our own." Yeah, that was one of those he didn't like. When exactly had he and Derek not been friends? Scott thought they'd parted on good terms. He shook his head as he looked off to the side with a frown on his face. "But Malia is pack."

He looked back to Stiles. "If Lydia's banshee thing passes to your kid but you hadn't thought to ask and someone did know, wouldn't you want to know?"

Stiles wasn't sure if Lydia had asked Arva about that or not. It hadn't really occurred to him to ask. "I don't know if Lydia asked or not, but... I don't know, dude. This doesn't feel like a pack kind of thing. Malia barely even knows us."

It didn't surprise him that Derek said they weren't friends. He always got the impression that Derek didn't really like any of them and simply tolerated them because he felt like he had to. Considering that he tried to kill some of Scott's pack, it seemed like a reasonable guess.

"I know you really want things to be the same as they were back home, but... I just don't see that happening here. Because we all came here to get away from that bullshit and start over. Don't get me wrong, I'm really glad that you're here, but I kind of think we're all better off away from Beacon Hills."

That didn't really answer his question, but Scott kind of forgot what it was as he flat out stared at Stiles. "No, I get that. This isn't Beacon Hills, but are you saying that part of that bullshit was because of the pack?"

Just open his veins if the answer is yes.

"God, no, that's not what I meant at all," Stiles assured him quickly. "But, the stuff we dealt with as a pack. That's the stuff we all want to leave behind. I mean, it's hard for me to look at you and Isaac and Lydia sometimes and think about the things that the Nogitsune did in my body. To think about Allison and how I was sort of responsible for her death."

He shook his head. "You and I, we were friends before all of that. So it's not the only memories we have of each other. But for everyone else, it's all kind of... tied together, you know?"

He visibly let out a breath when Stiles reassured him. The explanation that followed made sense, too. His brows lowered as he looked at the ground. "Allison was as much my fault, but the fact is no one could tell her no when she set her mind to something. Not even her dad."

The frown became something more like a grimace Stiles would recognize as Scott holding emotions in. "...I have to let them go. The Alpha in me doesn't want to. Wants to have their backs. Take care of them, but I guess I can't...and I have to let them go."

"I think we all blame ourselves for Allison," he said quietly.

He looked up and reached over to pat Scott's shoulder. "Or maybe get to know them in a new context. As a friend, not the alpha. I know that'll be hard, but you came here for a reason, right?"

"...yeah," he said quietly. His reason was to get away from the place where Allison had died. Sometimes he felt guilty as hell for not thinking about Kira, but she hadn't come here along with the rest.

And then there was Briseis.

Scott took a deep breath, let it out then looked at Stiles. "There's another reason why I needed to ask Derek about how natural born weres happen."

Stiles was a little surprised to hear that, but it was an easy enough leap to make as to why Scott would wonder about that.

"Eventually," Scott amended quickly feeling super awkward. "Not yet. But Briseis..." He shrugged and just knew he was wearing that stupid sheepish smile he got when he had been dating Allison. Stiles would see right through any attempt to hide things anyway so why bother.

Oh, Stiles recognized that look. It was the look of the guy whose username and password were both 'Allison' at one point in time. He shook his head.

"Dude. We haven't even been here two weeks and you're already falling for someone?"

"She's really sweet!" was his protest. "And completely out of her element. I mean, she told me that where she's from the women don't eat with the men. Ever. Forbidden. All of us must seem like something out of science fiction to her."

"Seriously, man? You're on a tropical island full of beautiful women who are willing to have no strings attached sex and you're falling in love with a girl from Ancient Greece?"

Because he had definitely asked Lydia if he was remembering right when he thought he recognized her name and she confirmed he was. Scott probably had no idea what he was getting himself into. Then again, Stiles apparently didn't either since pregnancy hormones were way scarier than he anticipated.

"What's wrong with that?" Scott looked like he was gearing up to being offended and crossed his arms. Yeah, they were supposed to kind of reproduce. A lot. But that didn't mean he couldn't find happiness.

Of course he couldn't. That wasn't the way Scott was when it came to pretty girls, though Stiles thought he was more into the badass type than the helpless type. Then again, he supposed he could see the appeal of dating someone who wasn't going to go charging off at the first sign of danger, at least from his friend's perspective.

"Why are you so against this? Is it Lydia? Is it because of Finnick? Because he told me he's not pissed at you. I think it all came across wrong because of Derek and Isaac jumping down your throat. I get it that you're stressed and worried. But why don't you want me to have this?"

Once again he was beginning to wonder if this had been a mistake and that when he spoke to Arva maybe he should ask her to send him home.

"Wait, what? You talked to Finnick? About me?" Stiles was confused about that, but realized it wasn't the issue. At least not at the moment. "Hold that for later. I do want you to be happy, Scott. That's why I'm worried about this. You barely know this girl and her history. You know that I know what it's like to be in love with someone who doesn't return your feelings. I don't want that for you."

Scott had opened his mouth to confirm that yes he'd spoken to Finnick then Stiles put a pause on that. He sighed.

"I know I don't know her very well, but I want to get to know her. I never said I was in love with her. I just met her a few days ago. But maybe I want to see what could happen."

Stiles wasn't going to point out that it was obvious his best friend was already at least half in love with the girl. He really didn't want to fight, so he just nodded and let it go.

"Okay, so, what did you and Finnick talk about?" He really hoped that the other man hadn't mentioned the whole swimming and kiss thing. He was not ready to have that conversation.

Scott and Stiles had known each other long enough now that Scott knew when Stiles was just dropping a subject. It was kind of frustrating. He'd really hoped Stiles would have been on his side about Briseis. One more thing he was on his own about, but he went with the next topic.

"Briseis mostly," he said then grimaced. "Big brother like warnings about hurting her or pushing her too fast. Then I asked why he was so pissed at you. He said he wasn't."

"Wait, did they know each other before here?" Stiles asked. If not, it was kind of weird that the guy was issuing big brother type warnings on her behalf. Then again, Scott barely knew the girl and he apparently triggered all of his protective instincts. Apparently there was just something about her.

He still didn't have a clue what Finnick's issue was the other day if it wasn't about Stiles turning him down. "Did he say why he got all weird?"

"I don't know," Scott said. He'd seen them talking before and they seemed pretty close, but Briseis assured Scott she was interested only in him. He trusted her to tell him the truth.

At Stiles second question Scott huffed. "No. Apparently we weren't talking about his personal life. Just him delivering his warnings to treat Bri right."

Stiles tried to level a glare at Scott, but the grin on his face minimized the effect. "It was pretty amazing," he admitted. "I took your advice. Which was pretty much the same advice Darcy gave me."

Stiles half-heartedly pushed Scott's hand away from his hair. Man, he hoped someone knew how to make scissors out of bones or something because he was going to need a haircut sooner rather than later.

"Yeah, I will. Let me know how your conversation with Arva goes. I'll talk to you soon."
