WHO: Rose Hathaway & Isaiah Lahey
WHERE: the beach & the waterfall
WHEN: Last Saturday Feb. 11th
WHAT: Isaiah’s Arrival
|It had been a few days since Adrian and Mason had both gone home, but Rose didn't feel any better about it now than she had then. She missed them, but beyond that, she felt abandoned. They'd left, just like Sydney and Eddie had before. The loss hurt even more this time, especially considering what Mason was going back to.
And aside from Christian, she was alone here again.
Stretching as she left her shelter, Rose decided to go for a run in an attempt to clear her head and cheer herself up. It was bonfire night again, but she hadn't made up her mind about going. Last week, she'd skipped it to spend time with Adrian and this week she wasn't sure she felt like being social. Maybe a good run would change her mind, she thought as she took off down the beach, away from her shelter and the community center and, hopefully, anywhere she might run into people.
Isaiah had been watching the camp for several days now. He was ready to join them but he had waited until after the full moon to make sure he could stay in control. When he had, he knew it was ready and he’d told everyone goodbye and set off toward the camp. He hadn’t told Cami exactly when he was coming since he wanted to surprise her but he knew she’d scent him out and he half expected her to pop up out of nowhere but he didn’t smell her anywhere.
He was so busy keeping an eye out for Cami that he didn’t watch where he was going and walked right into the path of someone who was running toward him. He tried to get out of the way but he ended up tripping over a root and falling to the ground. It didn’t hurt but he felt like an idiot. “Hey,” he said. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.”
Rose’s training had prepared her to stop or change direction at a moment's notice and she could have avoided the guy in her path pretty easily, but keeping him from tripping was another story. Hand over her mouth, she tried not to laugh as his complete lack of grace. It was one of those things that was actually pretty funny when you weren't the one landing on your ass.
“Don't worry about it,” she said, waving off his apology as she reached out a hand to help him back up. “I'm pretty sure that hurt you a lot more than it hurt me.”
He laughed. “It didn’t hurt that bad and besides I heal fast,” he shrugged. “My mind was a million miles away though. I was trying to figure out a good way to sneak into camp but I don’t think that is going to work.” Realizing he hadn’t told her his name, he shook his head. “Sorry. I have no manners. I’m Isaiah Lahey. I’ve been living in the temple and today is my first day with everyone else. Once I get there I mean. You might know my birth mother, Ella or my sister, Cami, they’ve both been there for a while.”
“So do I.” Rose couldn't help grinning at his slight rambling. He was cute. Kind of hot, actually, but there was something sweet about him too.
“You're Ella’s kid?” she asked. Then she laughed and shook her head. “Damn, you guys grow up fast. I swear you were just a baby like a month ago.” She didn't come out and say he'd grown up really hot, too, but that was probably implied in the obvious way she was checking him out.
“Rose Hathaway,” she said, remembering her own manners and holding out her hand for him to shake.
He shook her hand and smiled. “Yeah it’s different in the temple. Arva explained all that. She said that it would seem like we hadn’t been gone that long when we came back. We’ve been with her for eighteen years though. She called it time compression or something like that.” Isaiah was glad that the first person he met was nice and she was pretty too. “It’s good to meet you, Rose,” he said.
“So you're the same as me now.” She laughed at how funny that sounded. “That's so weird, but I know Ella is going to be so excited to meet you,” she said. “She's been hoping you'd show up soon ever since Chris and Nora did.”
Pausing, she grinned again. “So, do you need someone to show you around?” she asked.
“I’m excited to meet her too,” he said. “Arva tells us about our birth parents and we have the choice to get to know them or not but she sounds so nice, I want to get to know her. I know Isaac isn’t here anymore so I hope maybe she can tell me a little about him.” Isaiah wanted to know more about him so that he could understand his were side better. Cami had told him what she knew but it was different with males and females. Hopefully Isaac had shared some of that information with Ella.
“I’d like that,” he replied with a grin. Isaiah wasn’t going to tell Rose that he’d been sneaking around for a few weeks and that he kind of knew where things were but she was cute and he liked her already so he wasn’t going to turn down a tour.
“I didn't really get the chance to know Isaac, but Ella’s really nice,” she said, nodding at his explanations. She completely got wanting to know more about where you came from. She'd spent most of her life curious about who her father even was. It was only recently that she'd met him and found out he was her dad. Pretty weird shit.
“Lucky for you,” she grinned back, “I happen to be free. I can show you where everything is. I even know the best places to go skinny dipping,” she added with a wink. It felt good just to hang out and flirt with someone without it really meaning anything.
“Skinny dipping? Well that sounds like an excellent tour,” Isaiah grinned. He wasn’t shy when it came to that sort of thing, it was hard to be when you grew up in Arva’s temple. “We could just start with that if you want. I already know there’s a waterfall. I don’t know how to get there but I’d like to see it.”
Rose was glad for the deep tan being out in the sun so much had given her when he said that. Her cheeks pinkened a little at his words, but then she grinned back at him.
“The waterfall is one of my favorite spots,” she told him as she gestured the direction they should walk. “We have showers in the community center, but a lot of us still like to use the waterfall. I can definitely show you how to find it.”
“I’m more used to showering outdoors anyway,” he said as they made their way to the waterfall. “The temple has the usual things but Arva encouraged us to use nature’s gifts as much as we could. There are a couple of really beautiful waterfalls near there.” Isaiah had often wondered where the temple was in relationship to the rest of the island but something told her that he would never know. It probably was on a completely different plane of existence from the others if the fact that they aged eighteen years in about a month was any indication.
Rose looked over at Isaiah as they walked. “What was it like at the temple?” she asked him, curious. “Besides the waterfalls. I mean, did it really feel like 18 years for you guys or do you just grow up really fast?” That was probably too many questions, but when else was she going to find this stuff out?
“It felt like eighteen years. We didn’t age any quicker than anyone else as far as we knew. I don’t understand how it works but it felt like normal time passing.” They walked along for a few moments while he tried to figure out what to say. “It’s really beautiful there. Peaceful, everything we need is there. We go to school, learn things about the island, we learn about our home worlds, Arva tells us things about our birth parents. She takes good care of us.”
“So, it really feels like 18 years since you were here?” She could kind of imagine how it would be to go without your real parents for that long, but even she had seen more of her mom than that. Then again, these kids had Arva and the other gods and they got to hear all about their parents, so maybe it didn’t really compare to her own childhood.
“Do they just, like, kick you out when you turn 18, then, or did you join us because you wanted to?” She knew he probably didn’t want to answer a bajilion questions, but she couldn’t really help herself.
“Well we all know that we’ll be expected to join the camp when we turn eighteen but no, Arva doesn’t kick us out. Some people stay a little longer for a variety of reasons. Lucas and Cami did because they wanted to leave together. Cami and I have the same birth father in case you didn’t know,” Isaiah had no idea what people at camp knew or didn’t know about them but that was a pretty big piece of information. “Some come back. I didn’t know her until she came back but Moon, she was here and then decided to go back. She’s helping with the younger ones now, Arva has told her that she doesn’t have to come back if she doesn’t want to or until she’s ready. I don’t know her that well so I’m not sure why she decided to come back.”
Isaiah was happy to answer Roses’s questions. He could only imagine how curious the people at camp were about them because he knew that all the kids at the temple were just as curious in return. “So let me ask you a question,” he said and laughed. “Does everybody really have sex all the time?”
Fair was fair, she guessed. Rose wasn’t sure she was the right person to ask, but she was going to try to answer him anyway. “Um, some people do, I guess,” she said, shrugging. “Not all of us do, so it’s kind of up to the person and what they want. My friend Mara, I think she’s only been with, like, one person so far, but there are some people who are definitely taking the whole ‘Sex Island’ nickname to heart.”
They were almost to the waterfall and she slowed her steps. “You’ll have to tell me how this one measures up to the ones you grew up with,” she said as the waterfall finally came into view.
Isaiah wasn’t sure that he was ready to have sex yet but he’d heard about it from Cami and it did sound like something worth trying out as soon as he could. Right now though, he was more interested in the waterfall as they stepped into the clearing. “Wow, yeah this one stacks up pretty nicely,” he said. “It’s not quite as tall as my favorite one but it’s great. I can see why this is one of your favorite spots.”
“I have other ones I like, too,” she admitted, but this is one of my favorites. “The only drawback is a lot of people like to bathe in it, so it’s not great if you’re looking for privacy.” She stood there watching the water for a moment, enjoying the view, but then she looked over at him again.
“I know a great spot for swimming, if you’re interested,” she suggested.
“Sure, I’m interested,” he said. “Lead the way.” Isaiah definitely liked this girl. She was friendly, not to mention hot and while Cami might possibly want to kill him for not showing up in camp to look for her first, she’d just have to understand that hot girls would always outrank sisters. Unless the sister was bleeding to death or something like that.
