WHO: Christine Chapel and Leonard McCoy WHAT: Discussing a few things WHEN: Backdated to the day that Barry left WARNINGS: None STATUS: Complete
Christine walked up the steps of the Medical Center, wiping a tear from her eye. She shouldn’t have been surprised but she was. The last time she’d talked to Barry at any length, she’d known that something was bothering him and she still wasn’t sure exactly what it was. Whatever it was though, he’d decided to go home and she was going to miss him. She had wanted him to stay of course but in the end, it was his decision and she knew him well enough to know that he believed it was what he needed to do or he wouldn’t have done it. That didn’t make saying goodbye any easier though.
With a sigh, she opened the door and walked inside. Leonard was here somewhere, she knew and right now she desperately needed to see him. He wasn’t hard to find, he was sitting on the small couch they’d fashioned out of some wood in the room that they used as an office, reading. Christine walked in and sat down next to him, taking the book out of his hand and curling up against him, wrapping her arms around him and resting her head on his shoulder. “Barry’s gone,” she said quietly. “He just left.”
Leonard knew as soon as he looked up to see her walking in that something was wrong. He didn’t resist when she took the book from his hand and he wasted no time in wrapping his arms around her as she leaned into him.
“Oh, baby, I’m so sorry,” he murmured into her hair, pressing a kiss to her head as his arms tightened around her to hold her closer. He knew she and Barry had become close. It wasn’t something he felt threatened by, even if a part of him had been jealous to find she was having a child with another man. He hadn’t had a right to his jealousy then and now? Well, he felt pretty secure in how they felt about one another.
Besides, Christine was hurting. That was all that mattered here. She was hurting and he wanted to make it better.
“I wasn’t expecting it, you know?” she said, snuggling next to him. “He was the first friend I made here so it’s going to feel strange with him not being here. I think he was even one of the first people here period.” As people left, it seemed that before long, she would be the person who had been here the longest. “I was hoping that he’d at least stick around to meet Christopher if he came back although I keep hoping but so far he hasn’t.”
Nodding, he wrapped his arms more tightly around her. “I know, baby,” he said. He could be jealous of her friendship with Barry and maybe a part of him was, but he knew how much he'd meant to her and he was sorry he was gone.
“He’ll show up,” he said confidently. “It hadn't been very long since he went to go live on the temple. We just have to be patient.” He ran his hand lightly over her cheek and brushed back a few stray strands of her her, hesitating before asking a question he'd been wondering about.
“Do you ever think about having another kid?” he asked. He knew it could be a sensitive topic but what he wanted to know was if she'd consider having one with him.
It was a question that she had asked herself many times in the weeks after Christopher’s birth. She was sure that she wanted more children but she had no idea who she wanted to be the father and then things had changed. Now she knew and she hoped that he felt the same way.
“I do,” she said. “There’s no doubt that I want more but this time it’s for keeps. I had no idea how hard that would be even when I believed I was doing the right thing. No, I want to have at least one more but I want to keep it. I want a real family.”
For a moment, she paused and then she reached up and rested her hand on his cheek. “I’d like to have that family with you if you’re up for it.”
He held his breath waiting for her answer, even though he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted it to be, but then she told him she wanted to have a family with him and he realized that was exactly what he wanted too.
“I wasn’t sure if you were ready,” he said, grinning like an idiot, “but, yeah, I’m up for it. There’s no one else I’d want to do it with and there’s no way I could give up a kid we had together, especially not...” his voice caught for a moment before he could continue. “...knowing what you’ve been through.”
Christine sat up so that she could kiss him softly on the lips and then pulled back. “I’m not sure that I’m ready just yet but I know that’s what I want. I want us to have a baby and be a family.” she rested her head on his shoulder. “If and when Christopher comes back, I want him to know that he’s part of our family too if he wants to be. I don’t know how he’ll feel about that, it’s entirely up to him. I just want him to understand that I didn’t give him up because I didn’t love him or that I’ll love our baby more than him.” She’d been putting a lot of thought into this lately and she was glad that they were finally having a chance to talk about it. “Can you imagine our kid? Probably the most stubborn child ever.”
“Stubborn, but if it’s anything like its mother, it’ll be beautiful and kind and kind of amazing,” he said smoothly. Leonard pulled her close, gently rubbing her back and bending his head to kiss her again. The kiss she’d given him had been brief, but he let his lips linger this time, giving her a real kiss even though he wasn’t trying to start anything more.
“We don’t have to rush this,” he assured her when he pulled back again. “However long you need to wait, we’ll wait. We’ll do this whenever you’re ready.”
It still amazed Christine how right this felt. She’d always cherished their friendship but she’d never dreamed that there could be more. Being here with him though had shown her different and she wondered if that could have been Arva’s design all along. “I know we don’t have to rush,” she said when they broke apart. “We have plenty of time and you know me, I want to get the babies that are due here before I get pregnant and have to slow down. Because I have a feeling that this time, you’re going to be impossible and make me stop working a lot sooner than I want to.” She made a face at him but she was teasing, Christine was glad that he wanted to take care of her even though she could take care of herself, it was still nice.
“Damn right, I am,” he said, grinning at her. “I’m gonna make damn sure you and our baby are both taken care of.” Maybe that made him a little overprotective, but this wasn’t just anyone. It was Christine. He was already protective of her and if she was carrying their baby, it was just going to get worse.
“In the meantime,” he teased, learning in for another kiss, “I think maybe we should get some practice in.”
Christine raised an eyebrow at him and kissed him back. When she pulled away, she grinned at him. “I think practice sounds like a great idea but we might want to go home for that. I don’t think I want anyone just walking in on us. Even on Sex Island, that’s a lot more than people want to see.”
She stood up and grabbed his hand, pulling him to his feet. “So let’s go home. Practice makes perfect.”
