Oliver had never hidden his feelings for Felicity from Rose and he wasn’t going to start now. When they’d decided to have a baby, he’d promised himself that he would tell Rose, he didn’t want her reading about it on the network or hearing it from someone else. It was only fair that she hear it from him. While he wasn’t in love with her, he did care deeply for her and he enjoyed being with her and considered her one of his best friends. They had connected in a way that had surprised him given the difference in their ages but that never seemed to matter when they were together. He’d gone up to her after dinner and told her that he thought they should skip the bonfire that night. Felicity knew what he was doing and wasn’t expecting him home, he explained, so he could stay as long as she wanted him to. Oliver had no idea how long that would be or how Rose would feel after he told her what he was planning to tell her. The two of them walked back to Rose’s shelter and as soon as the door closed, any thought of telling her went out the window when he kissed her. Soon there were clothes being removed and bodies landing on the bed and then when the storm had passed, they were lying there quietly, trying to catch their breath when Oliver spoke. “Felicity’s pregnant,” he said. When Oliver had suggested they skip the bonfire, Rose hadn't even hesitated in agreeing. As much as she knew she needed to socialize, spending time with Oliver was one of her favorite things. She never turned down an excuse to be with him, even if a part of her knew she shouldn't let herself get so attached when she knew he was in love with someone else. They'd barely made it into her shelter when they were kissing. It was honestly hard to say who started it. Maybe it was a mutual thing. It definitely felt mutual when they couldn't seem to get each other’s clothes off fast enough. She didn't even really know where some of their clothing ended up, but it didn't matter at the moment. She was focused on the moment, just being with him. She was basking on how good being with him always felt, thinking that this was definitely better than the bonfire when he dropped his bomb. Surprise and hurt both showed in her expression before she managed to mask her emotions, slipping her guardian mask into place and trying to conceal how she really felt from him. “Oh,” she said. There was a beat before she added, with a little faked enthusiasm. “That's great. I'm really happy for you.” He’d done it again. Oliver knew that sometimes (a lot of times since he’d been back from the island) he had the social skills of a toadstool. Dropping his news out there like that was not the smartest thing he’d ever done and he caught Rose’s expression before she shut herself off. “I’m sorry,” he said, wanting to touch her but knowing that right now wasn’t a good time. “I could have said that a little better or at a different time instead of just after...I’m sorry.” Oliver had no idea what to say next but he wanted to try and make up for putting both of his feet in his mouth. “I just…..well I promised myself I’d tell you. I didn’t want you to hear it from anyone else. I guess I didn’t think that we’d…..” the obvious way to finish that sentence was ‘have sex first’ but he should have known better. The chemistry between them couldn’t be denied and he should have known they’d end up in bed. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you in a more delicate way. Instead of just blurting it out.” Rose wasn't exactly great at the whole tact thing, herself. She had a tendency to say the things no one else would and not always at the most appropriate times. She couldn't really fault him for being the same way. Besides, hearing he was having a baby with someone else, even someone she knew he loved as much as he did Felicity, was going to hurt no matter when he told her. No matter how many times she told herself it would be stupid to get attached to him, she had. He'd been one of her first real friends on the island, but it was more than that. “It's fine, Oliver,” she lied. Luckily, Rose was a really good liar. The surprise had kept her from hiding her feelings right away, but now that she had time to recover from the surprise, she was doing a pretty good job of keeping her emotions from her face. She even managed to fake a pretty convincing smile. “I know how much you love her. It's not like this is really a huge surprise. I think it's great. You must be thrilled.” Oliver watched her face, still not completely convinced that Rose was telling the truth. He’d hidden his own feelings enough times to be able to spot the signs but he wouldn’t push her, he’d take her at her word. “I’m happy. A little bit overwhelmed by it all but happy.” Even though you couldn’t have a baby here unless you planned it, Oliver was still a little bit apprehensive about the whole thing. He didn’t doubt that Felicity would be fine but he also wondered what would be best for the baby. They hadn’t made a decision about what they were going to do yet but that wasn’t something he wanted to bring up to Rose. The last thing Rose actually wanted to do was talk about how happy Oliver and Felicity were, but she made herself smile and nod and do the good friend thing. Friends. That’s really what they were. Sure, they were friends who had really, really good sex a lot, but he’d never made her any promises. It wasn’t his fault she’d stupidly developed these feelings for him and she wasn’t going to screw up his obvious happiness by being a bitch about it. “You’re going to be great,” she assured him. “You’ll be an awesome dad.” She didn’t ask if they planned to keep the baby. She was pretty sure she didn’t actually want to know the answer to that. It was bad enough knowing that when it came to having a kid here, she hadn’t been his choice. “We’ll see. I always thought my dad was great and then I found out later that he wasn’t the person I thought he was. Neither was my mother for that matter.” Oliver supposed that was something a lot of kids went through, thinking their parents could no wrong and then finding out differently. “This place though, it’s a lot like Lian Yu without the crazy stuff. Or at least without the same crazy stuff. I had to learn to survive without anything there so if I could do that, I guess I can take care of a kid.” “I thought my mom didn't give a shit about me. Turns out I was wrong about that, too.” Legitimately forgetting her jealousy for a moment, Rose reached for his hand. “You are not your parents. You are Oliver Queen and you are going to be a great dad, whether you decide to keep this kid or you wait and decide to raise a kid later. Because you're you.” Her mask dropped in that moment and her eyes shone with pure love and faith. She might not like that she wasn't the one he wanted to do this with, but she absolutely believed in him and for a moment all that mattered to her was that he knew that. Oliver saw the look in her eyes and his heart turned over. He wished that he could tell her how he felt, that while he did love Felicity, he loved her too. It wasn’t something that he had expected to happen but it had and he didn’t know how to tell her without sounding like a giant douche. Instead he leaned forward and kissed her lightly and then squeezed her hand. “Thank you,” he said. “That means a lot to me.” For a moment he just sat there and then he took a deep breath. “Rose….I don’t want you to think that any of this between us was just the whole open relationship island thing because it’s not. You mean a lot to me, I care about you….I don’t know what else to say.” “You don't have to say anything,” she said, shaking her head. “This is why we’re here, right? Making the babies. And you've loved Felicity a lot longer than you've even known me. It makes sense you'd want it to be with her. You don't owe me any explanations.” She meant that, even if it hurt and she did her best to put on her supportive face, hiding any of the jealousy and disappointment she was feeling. Rose knew Oliver cared about her. That wasn't in question at all. She was jealous on so many levels right now, but she refused to show it. He deserved her support and that's what he would get. “Don't apologize, okay?” she added. “You didn't do anything wrong.” He heard her words but he still worried. Oliver had made a lot of mistakes with the women in his life, and he wanted to get it right this time. “Okay. I won’t.” he reached out and brushed her hair back. “I’m really glad that we met, Rose. I still want to spend time with you in whatever way you want that to be. It’s up to you.” Oliver wasn’t going to assume that Rose would want to have sex with him knowing that Felicity was pregnant but he enjoyed spending time with her no matter what they did. Rose knew she should probably pull away from him and put some space between them. He was having a child with another woman and even if they might not keep the baby, even if he and Felicity had an open relationship, she knew he didn't feel the way about her that she did about him. She knew he wasn't ever going to be able to give her what she wanted. Despite knowing that, she couldn't make herself pull away. She wanted what she could get, even if it wasn't exactly what she wanted. Besides, this was her shelter. She couldn't exactly leave. She wasn't even sure she wanted to. Leaning in a little, she brushed her lips lightly over his. “I don't want anything to change if it doesn't have to,” she told him. He knew it was selfish but he was glad that she felt that way. Rose meant a lot to him, even if he would never love her in the way she deserved to be loved. “Then we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “Because I don’t want it to either.” Oliver didn’t expect Felicity to stop whatever she was doing, she knew that and she wouldn’t expect him to either. He didn’t know if Felicity was sleeping with other people and hadn’t asked. It was probably a little selfish of both of them wanting to keep things the way they were, but Rose didn't want to think too much about it right now. What she wanted to do was kiss him and not think about much, period. It probably wasn't the most healthy thing in the world, but it was better than dealing with his news. |
