Cam was trying to learn everything that he could manage, watching people as they worked on shelters, started fires; he was trying to pick up the things that he could without having to bother them to sit down and teach him and once he'd gotten those things under his belt, then he'd start asking for help learning to do the bigger things, like hunting. He helped around camp where he could, as he'd said to Reese the day prior, doing grunt work because he was big and strong enough to do it. That was all well and good but if he was honest, he was kind of tired. Physically, he'd put himself through more in the past few days than he had in over a year, since he'd quit football to finish raising his little sister into her teen years. So when he saw a way to be useful without having to do any manual labor for a little while, Cameron jumped on it.
Sydney seemed like maybe she hadn't really thought her decision to join the project through all that thoroughly, because she was clearly uncomfortable with the larger point of the project, which was to sustain and create life. He assumed that it would mostly come after the part where they built up the community in a basic but secure way, but still...he had known that was going to be a big part of being here. He wondered if she'd been so wrapped up in the idealism of the community as a group effort that she hadn't considered the community as a living entity. Which...made him feel kind of bad for her. It sucked to think that she was uncomfortable in a place that was supposed to feel peaceful and prosperous.
After lugging the firewood back to the camp, Cam headed out to look for Sydney. For a few seconds, he almost wished he hadn't given his shirt to that Patty woman because he had a feeling the shirtlessness was going to make Syndey uncomfortable all over again, but it was too late now. "Sydney?" he asked when he finally saw a form sitting near the water. She was tiny; he was probably going to look like a goddamned giant to her. For that reason, he hung back, waiting to be invited to officially join her.
