Important information for new arrivals
Since we've had several new arrivals recently, I wanted to make a post with some things you all need to know. Many of you will have already found out some of this information from interacting with the other volunteers, but I wanted to put it all in one place and on the record so that we don't leave anything important out. Also, we could link other newbies to this in the future so that we don't have to keep explaining the same things.
New arrivals- Please feel free to ask questions here.
Veteran volunteers- Please add any other information you can think of that should be added. Also, you can jump in to help answer questions.
PUTTING THE SEX IN SEX ISLAND You might think you know the facts of life, but they are a bit different here. 1)Ladies, you won't get pregnant unless you want to. Guys, you can't get a girl pregnant unless you want to. Arva controls conception and BOTH partners have to agree. Think of it as foolproof magic birth control. 2)Pregnancies only last three months. 3)If you have a baby, you don't have to raise it unless you want to. You can give the baby to Arva to raise. 4)There is no VD here.
All of the above facts basically add up to there being no negative consequences for recreational sex. So, as one might imagine, people here tend to have a lot of it. The gods supposedly get energy from our pleasure, so they have tried to make it easy for us to have as much sex as we want. Many people have embraced this new freedom and are more promiscuous and adventurous than they would have been back home, BUT THIS IS TOTALLY VOLUNTARY. You don't have to have sex unless you want to.
DRINKING WATER The main camp is located in a clearing near a small lake with a waterfall. There is a stream that starts further uphill, flows downhill to the waterfall and then into the lake, flows out at the other end of the lake and then continues on down to the ocean. The rule is EVERYTHING FROM THE WATERFALL UP IS FOR DRINKING, so don't contaminate it. The lake and everything downstream of it is for bathing and washing things, so don't drink from it.
FOOD AND MEALS We eat most of our meals communally in the main camp area, so you don't necessarily have to worry about killing and cooking your own dinner. There are few people who do the bulk of the cooking, but we all help out sometimes. There are several people who like to hunt or fish who bring in fresh meat. Believe it or not, we were actually bringing in too much meat at one point because so many people were hunting every day, so we cut back. Now there is an informal schedule so we have fresh meat for dinner, but we're not over-hunting. There is a smoke house, so we can preserve meat, and we have a big chest freezer that we keep mostly full of back-up supplies, and there's no need to hunt for more than we can eat on any given day. We also have some farm animals, which Ruby is in charge of. There is a garden, which Sydney has been managing. There are many edible plants that can be gathered from the forest, so those that don't hunt usually do some gathering. Basically, almost everyone helps with food in some way, but it's not a full time job for most people. The gods have provided us with lots of resources in terms of food, so it's just not that hard to find.
WEEKLY BONFIRES It's become traditional that we have a bonfire every Saturday night. There is food and music and it's kind of a festive occasion. Sometimes someone will tell a story or make an announcement to the whole group. Sometimes we just talk and mingle. Attendance is optional, but it's a very good way to get to know your fellow volunteers.
SHELTER There are a few empty shelters left by people who went home. See Sydney to be assigned one of these. If they all fill up, then you may have to build your own. If you need help with this just ask on the network, there are several people who will be willing to help. If you would like a hammock so you don't have to sleep on the ground, please let me know. We sometimes get beds as gifts from the gods, but if you don't have one yet, a hammock can be a decent substitute and I can make them fairly easily.
JOBS People don't have formal jobs, but everyone finds ways to contribute to the community. We have some construction projects going on, there's the garden, the farm animals, gathering edible plants, cooking, sewing. Or maybe you have an idea for something you could provide that we didn't even know we needed. If you want to help with something, just ask around or post on the network.
