text post

Hey there, fellow islanders! I wanted to let you all in on something I figured out about our bracelets. After tinkering around with the different settings and running a couple of successful tests, I learned that our bracelets have voice capability. For those of you familiar with smartphones back home the bracelets act the same way. Just as when you want to communicate directly to a single person there is the option to call them instead. You just pull that name up and hit the microphone option instead of the text and ta da! To answer an incoming call you simply tap the little icon that will be blinking when the call comes in. A sound alerts you. Anyone who comes from somewhere without smartphones I'll be happy to walk you through the steps.

Any questions? Let me have 'em!

Oh, that's wonderful. That could be incredibly useful for sharing things that are a little more complicated like when I told everyone my life story. I can't believe I hadn't thought about playing around with that myself.

I wonder how difficult it would be to get some sort of speech-to-text relay set up as well, for the sake of documenting anything we might want to pass down later like some of the stories we've told at the bonfires. or if anyone a bit like me were to arrive who didn't want to be fixed.

Right?! The downside is having to edit the running mumbled commentary I'd make while reading of making posts. EDIT! EDIT! Haha!

Maybe there's an app similar to Evernote or something.

Yeah, really. I had some pretty advanced software for it back home and I still had some really frustrating moments.

If there isn't, I'm sure there's enough of us who aren't the medical sort of geniuses with enough down time that we could figure it out together with enough work.

If I had my laptop I could code up whatever we wanted. The problem is, these bracelets don't have enough memory for coding, and lacking an actual keyboard it would be difficult to work something up.

Yeah, that's why I've been trying to actually figure out how to make paper, which seemed a lot easier in theory than in practice.

But who knows, since some people have been getting coffee grinders, maybe they'll decide at least one of us has been good enough for a laptop this week.

Paper is tricky, messy and smelly to make. Soaked and rotting wood pulp is bleh!

OMG the things I would do for my laptop!

Yes, I was really underestimating the process. I've realized why so many civilizations stuck to clay for so long.

Same here. I'm lucky enough not to have any real attachments to coffee or alcohol like some people, but I am really missing my computer. And Destiny's

There are alternatives. The Egyptians used to press woven papyrus between heavy rocks to make their paper. Maybe something similar could be done with palm leaves.

Oh god you said coffee! I would happily walk around naked forever regardless of who sees me for coffee AND my laptop.

I was thinking of that when...Patty, I think? Mentioned the umbrellas she'd been making with some of the leaves. It's certainly can't hurt to try.

Oh I'm sorry! I always forget the effect that withdrawal has on people. Well, if I happen to be lucky enough to get a computer before you, I'll certainly be happy to share that at least.

OMG you are a saint! Thank you!

That would be wonderful.

Hardly. I just don't see the point in not sharing when there's nothing I need to keep to myself. Especially a computer; I think if any one of us got one, it would be much more useful and quicker to get anything done if we shared the use of it.

Oh I completely agree! The trick will be keeping myself from being too greedy with it. Haha!
