That moment when the one who got away and shattered your heart shows up immediately offering services to the ladies.
I'm too fucking pregnant for this
I need to make friends who didn't grow up where I did. Like yesterday.

I started working on a side project a little while back and then I got sidetracked and kind of...stopped? I know it's not anything we need, but the meat is really gamey and I was taking salt water from the ocean and then evaporating the water to try to collect the salt for seasoning. Would anybody want to help me with that project? I feel like that's something I can do and not screw up but it'd go faster with more hands.

Or, to the contrary, is there anyone who thinks they've got a project I could be helpful with that would be higher up the chain of priorities? Because I'd be okay with that, too.

I've done that before and would be glad to help, Lydia.

Oh, awesome, thank you! It's a tedious process, right? It'll take forever to get enough for it to actually matter to anyone, but if I have help it might not take so long.

Yes, very tedious. But much less so with people to talk to. It's a good thing for you to do, though, in your condition. It's useful but shouldn't be too taxing.

Agreed. On all points, really. Thanks for offering to help :)

I'll bring some water, and maybe some fruit.

And it's really no problem. I'll be glad for something useful to do, too.

Bri, could make sure she knows you don't actually have to boil the water? Because I think she was doing that last time, and that's way more work. In District 4 we just put the water in something shallow and let it evaporate in the sun and then scrape off the salt. You probably already know how to do that, right?

Anyway, I'm sure the last thing she wants is interference from me, but she doesn't need to do that extra work and it might sound better coming from you.

Oh, was she planning to boil it? I wouldn't let her do that.

But you should tell her, Finnick. Yourself. I don't think she's mad at you.

Maybe not, but I haven't talked to her in a couple weeks, and I don't want the first thing I say to her to be a correction right? Not in her current mood anyway. I'll talk to her sometime, just not about this.

Great! I didn't think people would actually be all that responsive to this because it's not as important as other things we could be doing, but my helpfulness is kind of limited right now and this is just...really basic chemistry which is one of the things I'm really good at, so...yeah, awesome thanks, Patty! :)

Not as important? My tastebuds greatly disagree with you.

I loved chemistry! Or science in general, but definitely chemistry, it was the best. And sea salt is so good for you, how have we not been doing this for forever already?

[info]eunoia

Haha well at least I'm in good company, then!

I was doing it...but like I said: sidetracked. I was boiling the water because I figured that was a lot faster than just leaving it in the sun because all I had to hold the water in was a canteen I didn't want to ruin and a conch shell I found on the beach. But I don't know if it might be easier with something out of the materials they gave us to do it in larger quantities without having to boil to compensate for the smaller quantities...what do you think? I'm still partial to boiling, I think, because it's faster, but...if we can do a lot that takes a long time it'll come out in the wash anyway.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]detectivespivot
2016-04-25 02:28 am UTC (link)
No, boiling would probably be the best way to go if we're looking to get salt out of the water faster. You're going to have to leave it out for a long time if you want to just rely on evaporation via the sun, boiling it will produce more evaporation at a faster rate.

But it does limit our quantity. We could always do both, or, realistically, wait for the tide to go out and utilize the seaweed left behind. It'll have a higher sodium content for taste and if we use it as an ingredient itself we'd be getting the benefits of iron and calcium, which you should probably have in your diet anyway.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]eunoia
2016-04-25 03:54 am UTC (link)
Agreed, except that yeah it'd be smaller quantities. I was doing it before because I didn't really have any other option. Leaving a conch shell full of water out to evaporate in the sun would've taken days and the output wouldn't have been worth it at all. Now, though, we have other options for building something more shallow or hell maybe even just laying out a clean tarp, so I'm thinking we could do both, maybe, and then we get even more of a product at the end of the the day, so to speak.

...seaweed too, yeah good point.

[Bri]
Damn you for not having my back on and making me do this, I'll probably regret it.

[Unfiltered]
The tarps is a really good idea. It's kind of similar to what we did in District 4. We used shallow ceramic containers, but we don't have ceramics here so we could just dig a very shallow pit in the sand and line it with a tarp. Fill it with a few gallons of seawater and you'll have a couple of cups of salt in a few days without much work.

Seaweed is pretty tasty too. We cook with it a lot in Four, we even put it in our bread.

[Lydia]

Yeah, like with the kind of equipment we had in the science lab at home, I could do it better, without losing anything but yeah we have to make due. Do we have clean tarps? I feel like using a dirty one is pretty counterproductive.

FINNICK.
Hi.

Apparently we have infinity clean tarps. As we take them off the pile they seem to reappear. You can also rinse it off with seawater before you start if it's a little dusty.

[Lydia]
So, I've been keeping my distance because I said I'd leave the ball in your court. But it's a small island. Friends? Or at least friendly acquaintances?

Nice, that works then. Well yeah, dust I'm not that worried about, I just mean I don't want to be using tarps that have had people walking on them or that were used to drag a dead deer back from the woods or something haha.

I told you that night that I still wanted to be friends... I've been giving you space because you seemed really upset.

Of course I was upset, but I wasn't the one who

Well, at least they're better for one of us. Yeah you guys have been working your asses off on that building. I wish I could help, I feel bad.

Honestly, you shouldn't feel bad about that at all. We have so many people working on it that more would probably just get in the way. Like we have 10 guys working on framing and only two hammers between us, so we split up the work assembly line style, and it's going really fast.

The salt is a really good idea. Everyone is happier and nicer to each other when they have good food. That's just a fact. Plus you'll get to spend some time with Briseis, who is probably the best friend anyone on the island could have.

I know, sometimes I watch you guys when I'm taking a break from sewing. Which, by the way, I'm terrible at, but at least if I'm trying I don't feel like I'm just taking up space while everyone else is working so hard for something I'll be using before most other people will ever need to. You know? I just feel guilty.

If only it were that easy... I like Briseis. We talked some before, at the last bonfire, not the one yesterday but... Anyway yeah, I like her. And I need some time with people I don't know from home. I feel like I unintentionally boxed myself in. Comfort zone in spite of the discomfort, ironically enough, I guess. So I wanted to break out, but Briseis is really sweet, I like her a lot. I'm glad she popped in here.

Sewing is like any other manual skill: Anyone can learn it, but it takes thousands of hours to truly become proficient. Bri is an expert, and she could probably help you, but the main thing is practice and there are no shortcuts, unfortunately. So it's not that you suck, you just haven't acquired the skill yet. You will get better.

Really, don't feel bad about it. We're all going to need it eventually, and I feel like the first structure had to be something shared with an obvious need, in order to get everyone working together, you know? Now that we've got the ball rolling, maybe we can keep the crew together to build houses and stuff. If we had tried to get people to build houses first and they knew they might not get theirs for a long time, more people would have opted to go it alone. So it's helping the community in more ways than just the obvious.

I can understand the pull of the familiar. It must be a double-edged sword having them here. There have been times when I kind of envied you having so many friends here, having people to talk to, but it also makes it impossible to really start over. Hell, it freaked me out when Gale was here, and we weren't exactly close.

Briseis is amazing. She's very humble about her skills, but she knows how to do so many things, and she's really kind and a good listener too.

Yeah, well...I don't have the patience for thousands of hours to try to sew something I can fit my fat ass into in a few weeks when I can't even see my feet anymore haha.

I guess that's a good point...that does kind of make me feel better. Still, I wish I could help. Even if I wasn't pregnant, I'd only be in the way, though.

It's reflexive more than anything. I came here to get away from them. Don't envy it, believe me, I envy the fact that you don't have to slog through all the drama from home and then some in the middle of paradise. I guess the grass is just always greener on the other side.

She is, I noticed that. A kind person and a good listener, I mean.

Well, no, you're probably not going to have time to master it while you're pregnant. Bri can help, though. Is it too soon to tell you that you're sexy this way? Yeah, probably

You have to let us grunts have our moment, OK? I'll never know half the things you do, but I can lift some heavy stuff and nail some boards together, so you just have to let the guys like me do what we're good for.

I said sometimes I've envied it, but not now. I wouldn't want anyone from home here. Everyone has stuff from home they're dealing with, but at least I don't have to do it in public. I was just saying that I understand the temptation to invite that stuff in sometimes.

Yeah, that's something. She seems to be willing to try to, anyway. I don't know how well I'll pick it up since I'm fairly set in my terrible-sewing ways but... I'm willing to try, anyway.

Well, if it makes you feel better, half the things I know are useless here on the island? But okay. I'll let you have this one. :)

Yeah...the public stuff is exhausting and I get it, because I do it sometimes and I don't even realize it because I'm so wrapped up, but then I read back and I'm like...God, this whole island must wish we'd all go home.

I don't think anyone wants you guys to go home...well, maybe a few wouldn't mind if Malia went, so let me rephrase. I don't want you gone, not any of you, not even Malia.

Because, honestly, what else would we read for entertainment? ;)

I'm kidding. I don't really enjoy watching you guys tearing each other apart, but there's not much anyone on the outside can do about it.

Yeah, I know. I'm...probably going to play the avoidy game for a little while just... I'm getting further along and stress isn't good for me anyway but it's really not good for the baby, I'm sure. So yeah. I'm forcing myself to branch out.
