Answers were something John didn't have, even after Ruby fired question after question at him. There was nothing rational about this, and every sane, semi-logical explanation form poison to allergic reaction still fell flat with the inclusion of all the symptoms. The eyes, those black eyes, so very wrong somehow – if he threw that out, this could be explained, but throwing that out wasn't an option.
He took the ointment from Kendra with thanks, then examined it briefly before determining it wouldn't be enough. The comment about the ER had been parental instinct, and for any other injury situation it would have been logical, but how would he actually explain this to a nurse or a doctor? What if they didn't believe him? In this day and age, people jumped quickly to the serious explanations and her other, impossible symptoms would be no defense for him if suspicions turned on Ruby for harming herself or him for harming her.
The decision was made, barely a complete thought before he started speaking. "Sports Medicine has a full stock of anything they'd use at the hospital, I'm going to go get what we need. We'll sort this out ourselves."
The arm around Ruby was used in a brief but fierce hug, even as he motivated himself to leave her. Unaware for Kendra's conflict as anything more than his own feelings, he had no reason to think leaving was anything more than a father's fears.
"You'll be fine. Just get that hand elevated and stick some ice on your wrist, below the burn. Leave the burn open to the air," he instructed, hugged her once more and then with a nod to Kendra, slipped out of the room to go do as he'd said it would. Hopefully it wouldn't take too long, but he couldn't deny that the necessary trip for medical supplies was also a needed chance to try and process what had just happened.
