What:Heidi sings, Nathan drools
Where:A smallish night club
When:Thursday evening
Status: In progress
“Oh, Heidi, you’re sure?”
Heidi nodded, looking more at her reflection in the mirror than she was at her best friend. She was due to sing in less than five minutes, and she would be mortified if so much as a stray hair was out of place. Still, she knew things were hard for Stella, having two boys to raise and the son of her boyfriend who was at her home quite a lot. Heidi had no children of her own, so she regularly looked after Jackson, Everette and Max to let Stella and Adam go on a date or just have some alone time without three young boys getting into everything. It was pretty amazing, but for a woman who was in love with being childless, having a to die for love life that included one tall, dark, handsome up and coming after another, Heidi could be pretty maternal. Stella’s boys looked forward to being at Heidi’s apartment more than they did to a day at the beach because of the silly string fights, the way she didn’t mind when they jumped on the furniture, and the easy going way she didn’t mind watching cartoons all afternoon with them.
“Heidi!”
Heidi looked up as Misty, the manager of the club rushed in. “You’re up!”
Flashing Misty and Stella a bright smile with her red, red lips, Heidi stood. When she was on her feet the full effect of her short, form flattering black dress were evident. She looked like she was born decades too late, someone had told her once. She belonged in a time of old time glamour and big bands and classy night clubs. As it was, she was a torch singer in 2006 who could only dream of a real record deal that would make her as big as Sinatra.
She sauntered onto the stage while the lights were still low. She had refined her routine down to an art now, and Archie, her piano player, knew it by heart. The lights came up, and a second later Heidi lifted her chin slightly and opened her eyes to reveal a sultry, blue eyed gaze and a hint of a smile. She charmed the crowd first with light hearted songs of love and good times, and then, at the end, she really pulled them in with songs that hit closer to her life. Pain. Heartbreak. Heidi had seen it all. She couldn’t trust, couldn’t commit to one man when she put her career first. She’d date one and find something lacking in him, date another and find herself bored…as soon as she let herself get really attached she would find some insurmountable obstacle that prevented the relationship from working.
Now, however, was not the time for thoughts like that. She’d need all of that raw emotion for later. As Archie launched into the opening notes of You go to my Head, Heidi flashed a charming smile to the audience at large.
“You go to my head
And you linger like a haunting refrain.”
Her voice was far from Sinatra’s, but Heidi did enjoy the song a great deal, and it showed in the way her voice all but caressed each word. One day, she vowed, she’d find a man who she couldn’t stop thinking about, instead of just another handsome Joe or Ted.
“And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne…”
