In the middle of pouring over heavily marked maps with his dad and grandpa, Ben had caught Allana moving off in his peripheral vision. Her distinctive red hair hard to miss as it was, but that wasn't why Ben had noticed. Since this had happened, every minute spent near her had including him noting not only her location, but her general state as well, with the training of a hunter and the worry of a best friend.
When the door closed behind her and she didn't emerge after a full minute, meaning she hadn't gone into the office just to get something, he wrapped up what he was doing, made a flimsy excuse and then went after her. He slipped inside soundlessly, the door closing behind him with no more than the telltale click of the lock, and stood there looking down at her with all the helpless awkwardness of a man faces with a woman in tears.
She was crying. Crying! He might have been raised with a woman's influence for all the years of his life, making him, as his (step)mom had said before when pissed at his dad, "a lot less emotionally stunted than your father", but that didn't make it any easier to deal with tears, especially the tears of a crying female best friends who he might or might not be very attracted to.
Btu at least he knew how, so without a word to her, he dropped to the floor next to her and pulled her into his arms.
