"It's not just our powers that make us better," Sam argued, "it's us. Who we are. Who we're meant to be. It's...it's just the way that things are, all right?" They were better. As far as Sam was concerned, that was supposed to include his family for what they, too, were capable of. No, they weren't as strong as he was, but they still fought it out good and well and that was respectable, wasn't it?

People always died in the end. As far as Sam was concerned, it was always because of him. Because he hadn't tried hard enough to save them. His abilities, Ruby's blood, all of that stuff. Didn't she understand that he was only trying to do good when he started all of this, as fucked up as it was?
