There was a reason Ruby was currently still alive, that reason being Sam, but Claire couldn't bring herself to say it. There was no way that it would sound like anything but that Sam needed Ruby to stay alive and that wasn't what Faith needed to hear right now, even if there was a disgusting, desperate truth to it.
"Everybody does," she said softly. "Castiel stops anyone who goes after her."
Even now, Claire wondered if it was only for Sam, or if it was for Castiel. Even if it wasn't because he still loved her too much to smite her, Claire did consider that it could be because he recognized his judgment was much like theirs – too influenced by emotion. Maybe it wasn't a never die so much as a 'not right now'. She just wished, if it was the latter, that the moment would come very soon.
And Faith's ponderings about Sam were things Claire had wondered too and knew that the others might also be struggling with, not that Sam should know better, but that Sam more than anyone had once been vehemently opposed to the few drops within him.
"The same way those kind of demons do everything. Lies. Coercion. Preying on weaknesses, twisting reality and just talking all the time, trying to make you see what they want." Claire knew that all too well. It might not have been, in literal time, that long, but in the suspended time of pain, she had known what it was like to listen to a silver-tongued devil for what felt like years.
Shaking off the correlation, she continued.
"Maybe she just preyed on the way he takes the blame for things, even stuff he doesn't have any right blaming himself so much for. If she did it every time something bad happened, over and over... eventually maybe Sam just lost his freaking mind and starting believing whatever she said. Started believing he could stop the impossible."
