Guilt. God, he hated that feeling. Lindsey sunk a little further down into the chair when no answer came, feeling like he'd done wrong. He'd done a hell of a lot of wrong all his life and he'd started feeling it in the past year. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I never meant to..." What? Instead of finishing, he jumped.
"But you don't know that. Right?" This he could work with, focus on. The Senior Partners wanting him back, enough that he wouldn't be caught by this little game of theirs. "Senior Partners figure I could use a little lesson and," he clapped his hands together sharply, "my wife wakes up next to a man that isn't her husband."
He itched at a spot on his jaw, looking thoughtful. "Never realize how those little moments change you, you know? Maybe if I hadn't dicked around in that fight with Angel and just staked the bastard. If you never met me." He got up off the chair, regaining some of his former swagger and a smirk. "Maybe if I'd had a father figure that was worth a damn." He went quiet for a moment, still smirking, then shook his head.
"Interesting as that is, I like me." He moved up to stand beside her. "People are going to tear holes looking for these people they've taken. You might want to suggest to the Partners that they keep the playdate short, set things right when they're done. Before someone switches in something that'll scatter their demon asses across whatever dimension they're pandering around now."
