As hard as she tried, the statement hit a nerve, and instantly Cathy was on the defensive. "My decision to put acting on hold for the time being has nothing to do with our marriage," she informed Eve honestly. "It was made before we were even engaged." Because she felt the need to elaborate despite the fact that she had nothing to explain to this woman, she continued. "As much as I love it--um, the stage, I mean--...it stopped feeling...I don't know, worth it, I guess, to continue to put so much energy into it in a place like this, where it's so insignificant. I doubt I was brought to L.A. to be in musicals."
If there was one thing Cathy hated, it was the idea that she gave up on her dreams because of a man. It echoed straight from her past, exacerbated fears that still remained from a time she didn't wish to repeat.
"I know he's bored with his job," she admitted, shoulders straightening, tense. "Don't think for a minute that that is what I want for him. It's not." Cathy literally bit her tongue for a long moment before concluding, deciding that when verging into this territory, all bets were off. "As for what happens at home, why don't you leave that to me? What goes on between us really is that 'good,' but I'm sure you'll have noticed by now that he isn't complaining."
She shot the other woman a 'look', suppressing a very real urge to roll her eyes. "This is hardly a typical visit, Eve. I'm not oblivious to that. But if you want to see the kitchen, I will gladly get you something to drink."
