"No professional allegiance whatsoever," Cathy affirmed with a nod, taking the question in stride. "Sarah was a close friend before I even met Peter--whom, for the record, I would consider a good friend as well." If they knew about Sarah, they knew about her friendship with Peter as well, and she had no qualms about clearing the air herself.
Eve's next question took Cathy by surprise, and she froze, falling deep into consideration. Her immediate response was that there was 'nothing' in it for her, at least nothing tangible, but now that she thought on it...
"It gives me a way to make a difference here," she told Eve candidly, folding her arms over her stomach. "You know as well as anyone how petty the day-to-day can seem here. This gives me something to focus on. Something within my power that's..." A long search for the 'right' word proved fruitless, so she settled.
"Important." She grinned, in spite of her current company. "Even if that means giving someone a meal and a roof over their head for a night."
