His fingers had just brushed the switch to turn the light off when his dog sat up, trying to get over Cathy to see him. Lindsey shushed the dog but what Cerberus wanted to do, Cerberus did, heedless of warnings, threats, and rolled up newspapers. The motion was enough to wake Cathy up and the light remained on as he drew his hand back.
Just for a moment, it looked like he was going to get away with it, but then her expression shifted and she sat up. He sat down at the end of her side of the bed, staring at the toes of his boots, scuffed and worn with use. It was going to be a few more days before getting dressed and undressed wasn't a sore hassle.
"I'm all right," he replied steadily before leaning forward to untie the laces on the left boot, feeling her watching him. He wasn't sure what assurances he could give that would take her off the edge she was on. He believed wholeheartedly in their relationship, their marriage, that he wouldn't stray from her and would remain faithful. But Eve in the city and at the firm did make things difficult in other aspects of his life.
