On her back on one of the thick blankets spread out on the ground, Claire looked up at the sky, trying to make out the stars. This close to the city, the lights dimmed them and the skies stayed always a little smoggy, but there was enough to see. Still, the sight above her wasn't of interest to her, it was the sights and sounds around her.
Off at a safe distance, she could hear the men debating about the set up and order of the fireworks intended for Ben's birthday, a discussion that was amusing especially for the air of "I know the right way" they had, as she was nearly sure they had never launched a show of fireworks in their lives. If anyone had, she hadn't heard that story yet.
This fireworks setup wasn't exactly legal, of course, but legality never stopped Dean from doing something he wanted, and it certainly wasn't going to stop him giving his son a birthday to remember, the very first Dean was able to be there for.
Thus far, everything else Dean had done had been a success, so Claire was sure this would be too, and that made her happy. Ben deserved this kind of thing in his life, and Claire found herself just loving to watch Dean throughout all of this, from all the planning for today and this upcoming weekend, to actually seeing him putting all the plans into action. She'd heard in detail about the day they had, from the both of them, over dinner and that had made the dinner that much more special. It had also done a great deal to help further mend the slowly healing cracks on her heart from losing her dad, especially when they'd been mistaken for a family by the waitress who served them. Months ago, she would have boggled at such an assumption, but tonight, it had felt somehow right. Very, very right.
