Sam followed the sound of John's voice, automatically assuming that he wanted Sam to look over something for a good hunt; maybe maps, coordinates, something. He had practically prepped himself to go straight into a more work driven mode when he stepped into the room that everyone seemed to be hiding within. The surprising attack - yes, an attack, he would later say - threw him completely off. He stumbled back a little, heart jumping up wildly in his chest at the sudden burst of noise from the surrounding room. His mouth fell open partially as he looked over to Mary, almost as though he were expecting some kind of explanation from her, but then he realized that he didn't exactly need one. He already knew what this was.
"I, uh..." His mouth clamped shut as he surveyed the room, looking terribly confused. They had thrown him a surprise party. A party.
If there was anything that was certain, it was that this birthday had already put his last few to shame. No one was dead or dying. Instead everyone that he cared about was here. They had been waiting to celebrate with him. A slow smile spread across his face as the surprise faded, quickly replacing itself with the feeling of warmth that the sight of everyone in the room, silly party hats and all, had inspired.
Sam instantly turned and wrenched Mary into what may have been described as a bear sized hug. "Thank you so much," he breathed, voice carrying the weight of some of that warmth that had taken him over. Pulling back shortly afterward, a wider smile found him and he looked out across the room at the few others who had taken the time to be there.
"Thanks, guys, I -" His eyes found Dean. Wearing one of the ridiculous party hats.
