One eye on Ben as he finished with the truck, as his grandson was posing as lookout, John went once more over the completed waxjob he'd done on the truck, once more parked in the spot Sam had left it last night. Though used, with a paintjob touch-up, some aesthetic upgrades like new hubcaps, and simple some elbowgrease, the truck didn't look bad at all, a nice outward package to all the other things John had done to it last night and today to make it reliable and useful. School might be a touchy subject with Sam, but John figured that no matter what Sam chose to do with his life, hunting would at least be part of it, which was why he'd added the hunting-centric upgrades, like a weapons locker that was similar to the one on his own truck.
With Mary and Sam out for the day on the 'shopping spree' they'd given him as a joint gift, he'd had more than enough time to get everything done with the truck, with a hand from Dean and Ben both in places. John was glad Mary and Sam had this day together, as she had missed every one of Sam's birthdays, other than the actual day of his birth, and they both deserved to have time today that had been set aside to just be mom and son. Slowly – sometimes far too slowly, and derailed more frequently in recent months – the Winchester family was getting a taste, and sometimes large helpings, of all the things they had all missed out on.
Declaring the gift complete, he pulled out the card and some scotch tape, taping it to the driver's side window.
