"We'll see about that," Sam responded, looking her over carefully. What would Ruby have if Castiel pulled away from her? What would she grip onto to keep herself from being anything like those other demons that they were fighting against? Before, coming in, fine. She had her reasons. But now that she had Castiel in her life, a steady force that she could depend on, what would she do when he was dragged out? Would she lose control? Decide to throw away what was left so that she wouldn't have to feel the pain that came along with heartbreak? He didn't want her to lose that happiness. She needed it, the way he saw it.
Digging into his pocket, Sam pulled out a handful of crumpled bills and slid them across the bartop at the bartender. The small man nervously snatched it up before being hailed off by his next patron.
"I'm not the only one with something to lose here," Sam told her sharply, sliding off his stool. "Don't forget that."
