The idea of Sam with other women made her flinch, physically flinch. For a moment she could almost see the future, with Sam moving on with some other girl while she stayed in the background.
"He could stay single," she ventured, her tone unconvinced even to herself. "We both could. It could happen."
Again there was a groan, and again slumping back on the bed, her head narrowly missing the small axe she'd discarded earlier that day.
"The opportune moment, right." Typically, that was something she figured out after it had happened. "And figuring out what the hell to say to him. Because blurting out 'oh jeez by the way I love you' might not go down so well."
The demon. Ruby. The only other one who knew her secret.
"She tries to discourage me from patrolling with him," she said after a pause. "Reckons it would be too hard or something, I guess she thinks I should just stay away from him until I'm over it or something."
