When her hands went up, Nathan pulled her close, nearly to the edge of the chair so he could hug her tightly, because offering her comfort was all he could do. He couldn't bring Bennet back, though the thought had crossed his mind to confront the PTB just so his daughters didn't have to mourn the man's death.
"I wish I knew, hon," he said, pressing a kiss to her hairline above her temple. "He's not the first who had reasons to be here that they sent back."
Even that didn't make it better because it still didn't explain why these powers toyed with the lives of people both living and dead.
"He was happy here all those months, you know that, right?" he asked after a time, looking down at her. "He was happy about having two daughters and being able to look out for you both, to watch you have lives that didn't involve crazy murders and fear0driven governments coming after you. It was his second chance, and he and I never saw eye to eye, but I know he was glad of that chance."
