Jean paused, waiting while he got up to close the door to give them more privacy. She was glad he was so concerned that no one else hear what was about to be said. She wasn't quite ready to tell her story to the world, least of all to people she lived with... even if some of them seemed to know exactly who and what she was.
Once he was seated again and he had nodded for her to continue, she took a deep, steadying breath.
The beginning seemed the best way to go. "I was very young when I came into my abilities." But that wasn't so troublesome. In fact, most children who possessed the 'X-Gene' came into their powers between the ages of ten and fifteen, the time puberty set in.
"I was twelve, and my friend and I were outside playing with a ball," she went on. "I actually threw it too hard and Annie--my friend--wasn't able to catch it, so she had to go out into the road to get it...." Every time she spoke or thought of the incident, she could see it so clearly; even after all of the years that had past, the memory was still fresh in her mind.
"Before either of us knew it, a car had come speeding out of nowhere and hit her."
She had flown so high due to the impact and landed in a ditch on the other side of the road.
"As soon as she hit the ground, I was at her side... holding her," she continued, "And I felt Annie's thoughts... I felt her die. I experienced her death right along with her."
They'd both gone somewhere together in those last few moments. Someplace far away that seemed to be in the far, deep recesses of space.
"I tried so hard to save her, that I nearly used all of my life force to keep her spirit anchored to our world."
