WHO: Tori and Ethan
WHAT: Fixing her computer;
WHEN: Tuesday Evening
WHERE: Tori's place
RATING: PG-ish
STATUS: Log; Complete
Tori couldn't believe her luck. First, Z had disappeared -- technically, she'd been sent back home and then, her computer had caught a nasty virus. How that had happened, she couldn't even begin to decipher. If Cam was there, he would've straightened it out in no time. In fact, the computer probably would've never had the virus in the first place, knowing all the precautions the samurai would have taken.
Thankfully, she'd sought help via the message board and someone was on their way to help her out. Hopefully, it would be taken care of in no time and her computer would be back to normal. If not, then Tori might give in to her desire to blast it with water. She could always buy a new one, right?
Ethan had some experience when it came to computers and the viruses they could catch, so when a woman named Tori had posted a message on the boards about that exact topic; Ethan was willing to help. After putting on his shoes, and grabbing his laptop plus a couple of CD-Rs he left his apartment, and got into his car. Tori's place was about three miles away, and thanks to the back roads; Ethan was able to get there in around 30 minutes. He parked the car, stepped out, and made his way to the door.
He knocked a couple of times, "Hey, it's Ethan. You wanted me to see what I could about your computer?"
Hearing the knock, Tori had to smile. She was pretty sure Ethan could fix whatever was wrong -- or so she hoped. Better to be optimistic about the whole ordeal, right?
Shaking her head, Tori moved to the door. She opened it and gestured for Ethan to come in. "Thanks for coming, Ethan. I appreciate it." Really, she did. The thing was driving her insane. "I'm not sure what happened but I'm hoping you can help," she added as she showed him where the computer was. "This doesn't usually happen to me." When your system is backed up with super secret ninja ops technology, no viruses are going to get through.
Ethan stepped inside of the room, and looked over at the computer before making his way to it. "It's no problem, not a problem at all." Ethan told her. He sat down at the computer, and switched it on. It took the computer longer than necessary to boot up, and when it finally arrived at Tori's desktop it was acting slow; it took Ethan nearly ten minutes to even locate where the damn virus was. Once he found it, he let out a low whistle, "You weren't kidding when you said this is a nasty virus."
He then checked the computer for any sort of virus protection programs, but the ones he could find couldn't seem to do anything. Ethan proceeded to take his laptop out of the bag, and quickly booted it up. Within a couple of minutes he was researching the virus, searching for a way to get rid of it, and e-mailing a couple of his more computer savvy coworkers about this. "It looked like you had a good anti-viral program. That virus shouldn't have even gotten in. I'd say you might need something similar to the stateful firewall."
"I try not to exaggerate on things like this," Tori admitted, with a small shrug. "I really do appreciate your trying to help me out. If I could've fixed it myself, I would have." Sure, she was smart, but she didn't know a lot about computers. That was Cam's area of expertise.
Tori watched what Ethan was doing, wondering why her anti-virus program hadn't caught it. It was state of the art, after all. "I thought I did. A stateful firewall? I have to admit, I've never heard that before. You think it will fix what's happened?"
"Pretty sure that it will," Ethan said. A notification alerted him of a new e-mail he had received. It was a letter from his co-worker explaining how to get rid of the virus. "Looks like we're one step closer to fixing your computer!" He proceeded to use his own computer to download the program that his co-worker had sent, and burned it to a CD-R when it was finished downloading. After that he placed the CD into the drive, and waited for the program to boot up. A menu came on screen; Ethan first chose to scan for the viruses.
There was a ten minute wait while the program searched for any and all viruses that the computer had. "That firewall only allows trusted IP addresses access to your computer. It's not 100% fool proof, but it can prevent a lot of hackers from getting in, and messing with your computer." An alert sound let Ethan know that the program was done scanning.
1,097 Potential Threats found. Would you like to quarantine?
>>Yes
No
Ethan chose yes, and the program went to work on destroying all of the threats it had found, including the virus that was the cause of the entire thing.
