John didn't speak at first, debating the merits of laying it all out at once, edging up to the topic or taking a place in between. In the end, he chose a spot near the middle, closer to saying it straight, because dancing around the subject would just unsettle both of them.
"Your mom is worried about you being gone every night, out there while that worthless demon is in this city."
It was, in the end, a cop out claim, because while Mary was worried about him and Mary's worry became John's, John was worried about Sam as well. He knew what Alastair was capable of, how fast confidence in oneself could be crushed, how Sam hadn't had those abilities back long – and John was certain of that, whether Sam was ready to admit it or not. It mean that things could be worse, as Sam might rely on those abilities when he should damn well just run away.
"I'm worried about you." The admission was made quietly before John turned to look at Sam, studying him for a moment, then speaking again. "It's time you stop running from this, Sammy. I know things are hard for you in more than one way right now, but you need to face what's going on with you and Heather."
