"I should have looked through the peep-hole before I opened the door five years ago. I should have been more careful." Babs shrugged, forcing her face calm as she talked about the night. It was never easy, but she could talk about the night and the last thing Terry needed to see was her breaking down.
She continued rubbing his shoulder. "There are a lot of 'should haves' that come up on this job. Dwelling on them is a mistake, because you can't go back and change what's already happened." Well, actually, it was very possible that they knew people who could, but that was hardly the point. "You were faced with the Joker and you did the best you could for someone who grew up in a world where he was long gone. He's smart... he's deadly smart and sometimes I think he has a memory like mine. You can't beat yourself up because he got the upper hand."
