They both had their reasons for being terrified about all of this. Some they had discussed, others still remained in the dark. It had always been awkward, talking about children with Heather. Sam usually chose to veer his way around the conversation as quickly as possible when it came up. Thankfully, she never did push the subject. Perhaps it might have been better if they had talked about it before. They would have been more prepared to deal with the consequences. Sam hadn't been all too worried about it just then. He never thought that anything like this would happen. They were usually pretty careful about things. Once or twice they'd slip up and forget to be cautious, but Sam never did worry too much about it. He had read about the statistics on pregnancy in school, he had written papers about it for classes. Despite it all, Sam had not expected for this to happen. He had not expected to be the one worrying about a child in the near future.
One little thing. And it would change their lives forever.
Swallowing hard, he held her closely and stared off at the wall behind her. He was well aware that he wasn't going to be able to stick around and play the supportive role forever. He'd have to get out soon. Get some air. Maybe he'd get a beer or something. Just so long as it helped him deal. Because that was what he had to do. He couldn't just sit here and pretend that he wasn't furious with himself.
"I am too," he told her quietly, eyes never leaving the wall, "but we don't have a choice." He squeezed his eyes shut, jaw tightening. "There's no going back."
