It was the first time in weeks he'd woken up without having to lock a scream in his throat. That in itself was an accomplishment. But the lack of a scream didn't stop Jake from scrambling immediately under his pillow for the plates left under there. He'd hidden the rest of the Orizas, hidden them as best he could. He didn't want Micah or Molly hurting themselves with them. The titanium plates were razor-sharp at the edges, save for one thick edge, only wide enough for a thumb to grip. A grip Jake's hands found as naturally as a babe found a breast to suckle. The fanny pack he'd taken to wearing, instead of carrying the satchel, could hold two plates with ease.
It was hard to keep the plates a secret. In fact, by now, Jake was entirely sure they were no secret, just a mystery added to him. Along with the Calla-speech still lingering on his tongue.
But pushing out of bed his bed was met with surprise. Jake swung his legs off the bed and met with furry warmth. He looked down, and shrieked. "Oy!"
"Ake!" barked the billy-bumbler. As whole and warm and intelligent as Jake had ever seen him. The golden-eyed bumbler wagged his tail, his whole fine body, and barked again, putting his front feet up so Jake could rub his neck. Which the boy did, with great zeal.
