The woman who now called herself Claire Sullivan glanced at the clock, and then, seeing it was past five, logged off her computer.
She sighed as she stood, reaching for her plain brown purse and her dark jacket. Then it was off to the ladies' room.
Minutes later, she found herself standing in front of the mirror, staring into the eyes of the woman she used to be.
She'd changed so much about herself. Her hair color, her dress style, her line of work. She now covered the birthmark on her face with makeup every day, and tried to keep it covered at all times. She'd even became painfully quiet and seemingly shy. And it was all in an effort to conceal her true identity.
But there was one thing that remained the same: her eyes. Those bluish-tinted eyes, flecked with a hint of green, so filled with sorrow, pain, and torment, mostly of the self-induced kind. There was no need in trying to change them, or so she thought. Even if she wore contacts, the anguish within was probably a bit of a giveaway.
With another sigh, she rubbed her eyes, and tried to tell herself that she wasn't that woman anymore. That she wasn't Lois Lane. Lois Lane may as well have died, months ago, when the man she loved had slipped away from their world in her arms.
She slipped on her coat, and then, with purse in hand, slipped out of the ladies' room.
After muttering a few goodbyes to her boss and a few co-workers, she was out the door... or, well, almost out the door. Instead of going outside, she bumped right into another person.
"Gosh, I'm sorry..." she started, but as she looked up, and saw the face of the person in front of her, she was starting to wish she hadn't uttered a word.
