I love you, he had said. Never had three words had the power to hurt her more then they did now. It felt as if Viktor were standing there again, telling her that he loved her, but her death would be decided by the council without ever hearing her side. Without ever letting her prove that she had not betrayed him.
The greatest betrayal was being slapped in the face with the love and trust she had given her dark father. Never had she dreamt that Logan could deal the same blow. That it would hurt more violently then anything she had ever felt before. She was well and truly broken. Her heart was lower then the soles of her boots and ten times as worn and damaged.
Why would he not call her? Talk to her? Give her one moment to answer the silent accusation his distance had made evident? She had never hidden anything from him, never gave him cause not to trust her words. Never had she been so confused and lost.
With every flopped, floundering beat of her heart she wished for trust. That he would simply trust the love she gave him so willingly, at least enough to give her pause to explain. Selene ached to be near him. To hear him.
Most of her long life had been lived in chosen solitude. Surrounded by people yet alone. Never had she felt it like she did now. When she closed her eyes she saw Jin's bloody face on the ten o' clock news. She saw Logan's hurt eyes staring at her accusingly. Every time she thought of him, which was nearly every breath she took, Selene felt her heart crack again.
Time would not erase this pain. For a long time she sat in the center of the bed in her new residence. In her lap she held an envelope. It carried his scent, he knew where she was. Earlier she had picked up this parcel from the front desk, the smell clinging to it had been enough to make tears burn her eyes. It was thin and flat, perhaps just a note. Nothing to get so worked up over. Yet she was having a hard time opening it.
When the seal of the manila envelope finally tore she was so shocked by what she saw Selene would have sworn she felt her heart stop. Thinking she was capable of brutalizing Jin was one thing, she had that in her, she was a violent monster at times, but this.....
Staring at the filthy image her numb, broken mood cracked, letting anger seep out. Logan thought she was sleeping with Creed. He believe this fabricated lie. All of them. The picture was ripped in half and left to fall on the floor. Why was she the one hiding? Seeking refuge from him? There was a storm building within her, an angry, violent storm.
Selene wanted answers, clearly Logan wasn't going to fill in the gaps for her so she would just have to find out for herself. Armed with the fire colored sword she let the door of her hotel room slam behind her as she left, setting out to find answers.
Her first stop was Logan's place. It still smelled of blood. The dried decay ruined the serenity those walls once held. She couldn't help but think as she looked around the room that everything between them was now stained with decay. A little guilt ate at her as she snooped around his home. Whatever guilt she felt was shrugged off simply because she had no choice, she had to find answers and he wouldn't give her any. It took some time and the place clearly looked ransacked when she was done, but in her hands she held the file. The one Logan told her about. With her prize tucked away she slipped out like a ghost and headed back to the Hyperion.
The contents of the file nagged at her, she did not even make it halfway back to the hotel before she had the file in hand and took a seat upon a park bench.
