Ron nodded. "Right." It was a pretty stressful time for all of them. Even so, Ron didn't exactly expect for her to remember everything. It was ages ago that it all had happened. They were first years, for Merlin's sake. "Well, the knight moves two squares like the rook and then one square perpendicular to that. Other pieces can't really block it, so if you've got to jump over other pieces then that's all right. You can do that."
He shifted a little before pointing to the next piece. "Pawns are probably the most complex members of the board here. A pawn can move forward one square, if that square is unoccupied. If it hasn't yet moved, the pawn has the option of moving two squares forward provided both squares in front of the pawn are unoccupied. A pawn cannot move backward; least not until it reaches the other side of the board. Then it can get promoted. Again, we won't get to that until it happens."
That said, Ron proceeded to explain the reasoning behind the remaining pieces. Then he turned to look off at Hermione. "The game is all about strategy, Hermione. It's not just moving pieces back and forth until you get to the other side of the board. It's like war, in a way. You win some, you lose some. Least until you get hold of the queen. Got to keep her safe, see?"
