"We will," he repeated, holding her a little more tightly as he heard the anguish in her voice. He had spent so much time wandering, so much time taking the idea that one day he'd return for granted, he'd never had to worry that it might not happen. As long as it was there, life was going on without him, it was fine. Even now, he spent a lot of time trying to kid himself that it was still the case, that it was his choice to stay away. Some days it was only pretending that got him through, as if it were necessary to lie to himself.
"Together again," he smiled distantly. "See, knew we'd find each other again eventually!" he told her, his smile becoming a little more genuine. He'd spent a lot of time regretting that he'd never bothered going back to find her, just another thing that he took for granted would always be there waiting for him.
