Sam had landed on his back. The wind had been completely knocked from his lungs upon impact and, for a short moment, he just lay in place. Drawing in a deep breath, he slowly rolled onto his side and pushed himself onto his feet.
Man, it was dark.
At the sound of his voice, Sam somewhat blindly felt his way toward Heather and placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'm here," he assured her. Feeling his backpack on his shoulder, he swung it around and started digging through it for the pair of flashlights that he'd thought to bring along. As soon as he got his hands on one, he flipped the switch and a ray of light flooded the area ahead of him. He used it to make sure that both Heather and Alessa were with him before he extended the spare in Alessa's direction.
