“Yeah, people, probably animals too.” His fingers were tapping steadily a the side of his leg, squirmish, uncertain of the place where they stood and it’s ability to not throw another one of those things at them… or maybe something worse this time. He hadn’t ever been a real fan of alleys, especially dark ones sitting in the crappiest part of big cities, and his two encounters in LA were enough to heighten that dislike. The vampire hadn’t been so bad. Vampires could be fought off and turned to dust, but demons were sometimes a different story all together, and that was exceptionally true when you had your back pressed up against a wall, a hand squeezing your throat shut.
He liked where he was, but not even he could deny that he felt unsettled when he was alone, when it was dark and his destination was seedy, shadowed by things that weren’t your everyday encounters. He wondered how the people who couldn’t protect themselves felt, knowing that they were trailed by demons, by vampires and God only knows what else. He had a chance when up against them, but he didn’t know about the normal people, the people who were human and nothing more, sometimes nothing less. There was pity for them, yes, and a desire to keep an eye on them when their backs were turned, and even when they weren’t.
Bart didn’t want to come off as some nervous kid standing there with his eyes traveling back and forth, to the walls, to the ground, to the tops of the buildings. So he didn’t. He was steady on his feet, his sight on her, but his fingers still tapping, tapping. Her question distracted him from worrying, and he threw out a reply promptly, without stalling, without having to think about it.
“It was an accident, like, not a normal one I guess. That’s why I can do that.” He didn’t know what else could be said about it. He didn’t know much about the incident, only that he’d fled after it happened, faster than he’d ever moved before.
“You can’t tell anybody about it. Don’t.” He needed to let that out. He was serious when he said it, his face not quite somber.
