Using his free arm to help Peter entirely upright, Nathan studied Gabriel as he answered Peter. "You had a letter opener buried in the back of your head until a few seconds ago," he said quietly.
The gun was still aimed just the same and Nathan had no intention of dropping it. His close friendship with Gabriel, the man fit into the adopted-family dynamic of brother, warred with the idea that he had just killed Peter, a line Nathan wasn't certain could be stepped back over once crossed. As far as reactions of a murderer went, Gabriel's was indicative of a man in shock, not a man with purpose. Instinct said it wasn't an act, but sense demanded more proof.
There was only on way to get that proof.
