It was late. Lex had just come home after a long day at the office. He came into his study room and set his jacket on the chair before sitting in it. He opened his laptop.. deciding to go over some notes before calling it quits for the day.
Chloe was in the mansion. She rarely left, and she'd gotten so thin. She wasn't eating properly, when she ate at all. She didn't like being the fourth Mrs. Luthor, but she had to do what she could to protect Lois. She heard Lex come in, but she wouldn't bother him unless he called for her, and even then...she was tempted to ignore him.
Lex glanced over a few more files, then looked up at the doorway. He hadn't seen his wife in awhile. "Chloe? Are you here?" Of course she was, but he thought he'd ask anyway.
Chloe grumbled and walked into the study. She didn't know what he wanted, but it really was best not to piss Lex off too much. She knew better. She knew how he could be. Still she played it over in her head and she couldn't figure out how she'd gotten into this mess. She hated Lex for all he'd done to the people she cared about and now...she was his wife.
Lex smiled at her as she walked in. She did look easy on the eyes, but... she didn't have a happy expression. That just wouldn't do. Well, maybe he could change that. He closed the laptop. "So, tell me about your day. Details."
There wasn't much to tell. She hardly left because she knew he had people watching her and she couldn't reach out to any of her friends. She felt so isolated her, and not like herself. "I read. A little."
"Ohh.. what book? From my collection?" He had a library of books here, from poetry, to old literature, to Warrior Angel comics. "Have you had a chance to go out and do some shopping? Maybe you should do that next."
"No, something of my own." Chloe said, biting her lip. "I have no reason to go shopping." She told him. Why was he interested in what she was doing at all as long as she played the part of the trophy wife in public.
"Well.. okay, but every girl I know likes using money." He shrugged indifferently. Really, he wasn't one to complain if his wife didn't jump to spend his money in the first week. Not that he'd have minded. "You know, like maybe some movies, food, new shoes. Maybe lingerie..." He smirked at that part. "Honestly, get whatever you want."
All she wanted was to be free of him. She hated him, and she didn't hide that fact at all. "I don't really need anything." She told him, leaning against the doorway. She should probably start eating, she was so tired all the time.
He looked up at her, noticing something different. "Nothing? Huh.. interesting." He thought she needed a good man, a good makeout session, and a good lay.. among other things. But she didn't seem in the mood. "Have you even ate anything?" He glanced to his phone, wondering if he should order something.
"Why do you care?" She asked, almost bitterly. He didn't know the first thing about her. She hated this. She felt like a prisoner here. Picking a fight with him was probably not the best idea though.
"Because that's what a good husband does," he said calmly, even though his patience was being tested. It wouldn't look good if his wife didn't look like she being properly taken care of. Not good at all. And besides, she was more attractive when was well. "Because it's healthy. Plus.. if we have a visitor this week, it'd look bad on us. And also, what would the children think?" Yes, that's right. He had been considering having them very soon.
The thought of having children with him made her sick to her stomach. She definitely didn't feel like eating now. She didn't even want to get into this with him. "I'm...going to bed." She told him.
Lex sighed, looking a bit annoyed. "Chloe... it's not that bad. It can be quite rewarding and satisfying." Hell, Lana herself could testify to that. As could Helen, Victoria, and various college girls. "But if you can't handle it, I'll understand. That's not surprising. Besides, we.. well, we could always adopt." He already had a couple candidates in mind.
Chloe rubbed her temples. She wanted nothing to do with him, but that was kind of hard since they were already married. "I'm 20 years old, Lex, that is way too young to start thinking about having children or anything like that." And she certainly didn't want to sleep with him, not that she thought she'd have a choice if it was what he really wanted.
Lex just smirked, then opened his drawer. He set a jar of Tylenol on the desk. "Hmm.. well, doesn't have to be babies. I was thinking somewhere along.. 12 to 14 years old. Such a tender age, especially in a city like this. Dangerous." He thought of Arthur, remembering that he had no family here. He'd have been welcome to stay here, Lex thought. Art would likely accept the offer. And then there was Danny, but.. hmm.. well, he seemed a bit too cocky on that message board.
Chloe wondered what his game was, she really didn't want him corrupting children. She was starting to feel a little dizzy. It had been days since she'd last eaten, and before she could do anything or stop herself, her legs buckled under her as she started to fall to the floor.
Lex immediately stood up and ran over to Chloe. He caught her by the arms, holding her up. "I happen to think I'd be a good father. Better than mine ever was, I can guarantee you that." He sighed. "I think you're right; going to bed might be the best thing right now." God, why did marriage have to be so challenging? Ohh.. right, of course. Lex liked a challenge. But this was becoming a pretty big one.
Chloe shook her head a little, obviously surprised at the fall she'd almost taken. He'd gotten to her quickly. "I haven't been feeling well lately." She admitted. She knew it was probably because she wasn't eating, though.
"You should rest now." He started to lead her to the master bedroom. "I think you also need to be eating more. I'm not here most of the day, so.." Yes, he couldn't be there to handle things. Of course there was 24/7 surveillance at the mansion, but it wasn't quite the same as being there.
Chloe let Lex help her into the bedroom, if she'd gone on her own she likely would have passed out or something. She still didn't know why he even cared. "I...I'll try." But she never really had much of an appetite.
"Good. That's all I can ask." He let her slide on to the bed. He then said, "The maids here are hired to serve. They can make any meal." He paused and asked, "I met a boy. Twice. His name is Arthur.. brilliant, resourceful, and and reliable. Kind, too. The place he came from is quite interesting. Would you care to meet him sometime?"
Why was he being nice? Chloe was so confused. She yawned and slipped under the covers though. "He sounds like a nice kid." Maybe he needed a place to stay. Chloe could look after him and try to make sure Lex didn't corrupt him too much. "You should bring him here sometime."
"Oh yes, he certainly is," Lex said with a smile. "I got the impression that he doesn't get a lot of praise in his world, or noticed much. He told me quite a bit about his place." He had been working to change that, on helping Art get by in a new place. Giving him compliments for success, offering advice, even giving a few gifts. "Alright, I can do that. I'll invite him this week."
Chloe nodded, yawning again. She was so tired. "I can't wait to meet him." She was too tired to really even fight with Lex, and that was saying something since she could always argue with him normally.
"And you will." Lex pulled the covers up tightly around her, then fluffed the pillow. "Get some rest. Hopefully, you'll be well enough to have breakfast in the morning."
Chloe nodded, again. "I'll try." She didn't want to almost pass out again, but she hadn't had much of an appetite. It was so hard for her, being cut off from her friends like this.
"Okay." That would do for now. He smiled slightly, then got up to turn off the light. "Good night.."
"Night." Chloe said, being civil for the moment, probably because she was so tired.
He nodded, closing the door behind him as he left the room.
