It was a long walk.
It was odd how the mind reacted to shock. It had indeed been a long run, from the isolated park where Tenel Ka had hidden herself after her selfish use of Force Lightning, to the downtown street where Jaina had died. Jacen was a Jedi Master, in great shape, strong. But he had pushed himself hard, as hard, if not harder, than Tenel Ka. He had run with everything he had to where his twin had fallen in battle. He had run until he finally found her.
He had arrived, breathing hard, desperately trying to get air in his lungs. Not from the physical exertion, although surely, that played a part. But just trying to remember to breathe in a world without his twin. It was like trying to learn how to breathe again after Anakin had died. He had arrived, and found his twin's crumbled body, the telltale and fatal injury glaring at him from the ground. There was no need to run anymore. He had found his sister, and he had been too late. He had gently picked her up, cradling her to him in the way he had once cradled his little girl Allana.
Then he walked. One step in front of the other. One, two, three, four, five....until he lost count. One foot in front of the other. He walked after that sharp and authoritative argument with Anakin, who he had avoided because he did not want Anakin to see how he had changed. But now he had to see Anakin. Because he was bringing Jaina to the closest thing they had to a home here. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven....until he lost count. One step in front of the other.
He had lost his twin. It was like he had lost his other half. There was a shadow where he had only had light before. One, two, three, four....until he lost count. How many steps had it been from downtown to the Hyperion? He didn't know. He had only put one foot in front of the other. Until he lost count.
